Current treatment options for #pterygium, an #OcularDisease, include over-the-counter topical treatments and surgery — both with considerable drawbacks. That’s why there’s an urgent need for more effective, lasting alternatives. While there are no FDA-approved drugs for pterygium, Cloudbreak is developing the first potential therapy for this condition, which is now in Phase 3 clinical trials. Daily Critical Care Pearls #48: Sugammadex 📌 It was designed to bind rocuronium and vecuronium to reverse paralysis from these neuromuscular blocking medications in adults undergoing surgery or patients unable to wean from the ventilator 📌 Unlike neostigmine (which also reverses neuromuscular blockers), sugammadex does not inhibit acetylcholinesterase --> cholinergic effects are not produced and glycopyrrolate or atropine does not need to be coadministered 📌 Sugammadex is faster than neostigmine and has less side effects according to a Cochrane review (but more costly) 📌 Dosing: To reverse moderate blockade from vec/roc: 2mg/kg IV x1 Deep blockade from vec/roc: 4 mg/kg IV x1 Immediate reversal of roc: 16 mg/kg IV x1. #criricalcare #pharmacy #medicine #clinicalpharmacy #pearls

💉 Sugammadex is a modified gamma-cyclodextrin designed for optimal encapsulation of the neuromuscular blocking drug rocuronium, preventing rocuronium from acting at the acetylcholine receptor. Sugammadex is used to reverse steroidal non-depolarizing neuromuscular blocking drugs rocuronium and vecuronium. ⚠️ Administration of sugammadex from 2 mg/kg to 16 mg/kg demonstrates a linear and dose-dependent pharmacokinetic relationship, with an elimination half-life of 100 to 150 minutes and near 100% renal clearance. ⛔ The most commonly reported adverse reactions after sugammadex administration is nausea and vomiting, headache, itching, procedural pain, and dysgeusia. Bradycardia has been noted after sugammadex administration, with some reports of cardiac arrest. 🔸 Anticholinergics such as atropine have been administered to counteract marked bradycardia and prevent cardiovascular collapse. It is recommended that vasoactive drugs such as epinephrine and atropine be available whenever sugammadex is administered. 🟢 For amazing clinical pearls, you can join my WhatsApp group: 👇🏻 https://lnkd.in/d3axttDk 🔴 You can also follow me on "YouTube and Instagram" as well: YouTube👉🏼: https://lnkd.in/d4Fx3vCr Instagram👉🏼: https://lnkd.in/dy6krB4q #meded #icucare #icupearls #pharmacology #clinicalpharmacist #clinicalpharmacology #hospitalpharmacy #NMBs #clinicalpearls

Are you taking into account the influence of bariatric surgery on drug absorption in your patient care? I recently contributed to 'Losing Weight, Gaining Life,' a book offering insights on overcoming obesity. Specifically, my chapter focuses on drug absorption after bariatric surgery. Drawing on my extensive experience in patient care over the years, I recognize the significance of comprehending these alterations and integrating them into clinical practice. I'd love to hear your thoughts and if you're incorporating these insights into your practice. #bariatricsurgery #medicationsafety

This year's Mason Lecture at American Society For Metabolic And Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) was one to remember by, the one and only, Dr. Paulina Salminen. Amazing work conducted via the #SLEEVEPASS trial and this wonderful #calculator was developed utilizing merged data from the two large randomized clinical trials; the #Finnish SLEEVEPASS and #Swiss #SMBOSS trials. A great resource to evaluate treatment outcomes in #metabolic #bariatric #surgery as well as obesity-management medications. #ASMBS #RCT #OutcomesData #WLS #OMM #Medtronic #MedtronicEmployee https://lnkd.in/g6duH4q3
