As technology evolves, researchers are finding new ways to use AI to update their risk prediction strategies. Researchers such as Cleveland Clinic's Shehryar Sheikh, MD, who had an idea for a risk prediction model to help patients with epilepsy using machine learning. Dr. Sheikh says machine learning is an ideal tool to support physicians because it can recognize patterns in complex datasets that may not be visible to physicians. More than 20 million people worldwide suffer from uncontrolled seizures caused by Drug Resistant Epilepsy. Surgical resection of the epileptic brain tissue is the gold standard therapy to permanently stop seizures, but only half of the patients who receive the procedure will be free from seizures in the long-term. A comprehensive search across PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, supplemented by Google Scholar and medRxiv, reveals 37 relevant records. 📚 🌟Dominance of GPT-3.5: 84% of the records focused on GPT-3.5, 11% on GPT-4, and 5% on both. Current LLM research in OMS centers around scientific writing, patient information/communication, and medical education. Notably, classic OMS diseases are underrepresented. 🔬 While LLMs show promise in enhancing communication beyond the operating room, their use poses ethical and medical regulatory challenges. Perioperative refers to the entire time period surrounding a surgical procedure or operation. It includes both preoperative and intraoperative periods, as well as the postoperative period (after the surgery). This term is used to encompass all aspects of patient care before, during, and after surgery.
