UPDATE FROM PAUL VIXIE: If you know me well enough that I can make recommendations about you, please reach out with one or more job URLs from the "Amazon.jobs" site. Network Engineer | Network Security Engineer | CCNA | Cisco | FortiGate | Security+ | Network+ | A+ | Python
Wanted to run some advice I received on Discord past you guys and see what you think. I was told that I should leave my CCNA off of my resume when applying for help desk roles. The reasoning was that I may appear overqualified and won't stay in the role long. I have a few reservations about doing this: -I don't think I am viewed as "overqualified" because I have never had any professional IT experience -I believe my network knowledge/training would be an asset to any helpdesk role -It feels dishonest All of that being said I still am considering at least trying it for a while. Something has to give on this job search. It has been 2 years and I can count the interviews I have had on one hand. People say start at helpdesk but helpdesk jobs are requiring more experience than network admin or NOC roles.

I got my first job working for an msp because I learned active directory. I literally build a home lab and set up server 2012r2 on a vm. Installed active directory and talked about it during my job interview. When the hiring manager asked me about active directory. I talked about creating user accounts, resetting passwords and adding users to security groups. I even talked about group policy and enabled account locked out threshold. The hiring manager was so impressed by me and my willingness to learn. He hired me and gave me a chance. If you see something in a job description. Try to learn it. Make yourself stand out and focus on learning new skills. #itsupportspecialist #desktopsupport #desktopsupporttechnician #careers #careerdevelopement #servicedeskengineer #helpdesk

IT Enterprise Service Supervisor at Fisher’s Technology | Security Professional | Aspiring Future Leader in Cybersecurity
Everyone wants a job in cybersecurity but not everybody is willing to put in the time to get one. Getting credible experience makes a huge difference and doing these “cyber programs” and memorizing answers on a test will only get you so far. The crazy job requirements aside for just a moment, I’ve spoke with countless individuals who want to work in cybersecurity but aren’t willing to put the time into learning the fundamentals!! Work those IT Helpdesk jobs! We all start somewhere and starting in an Entry Level SOC role is not realistic without knowing the basics of IT. The practical experience will trump theory everyday and I was one of those who wanted to skip right to the good stuff! Now being in the position I am through practical growth and experience, I am managing service & security for a team and a company where I would otherwise be helpless without this prior knowledge. It is no wonder job recruiters so often overlook potential candidates as I’m coming to witness through my own hiring process why that is. I was not to good for my Tech Support 1 position, and I’m very thankful for the current journey I am on. I ask for those of you reading this and looking to break into cybersecurity, Time will lead to experience, Experience will lead to Compensation. We have to start somewhere, and I believe we have to start facing the hard truths! ⭐️

Dynamic Business Development & Sales Expert in IT/SaaS | Proven Success in Customer Acquisition & Revenue Growth | Passionate Leadership Promoter & Certified Life Coach
I Love this, This approach can be incredibly helpful in streamlining your job search and ensuring that you are investing your time and effort in companies that are more likely to hire you for your desired role. By using a boolean string to capture multiple variations of your target role, you can effectively filter and narrow down your search results. Additionally, filtering by people and location allows you to identify individuals who work in your desired role and live nearby, which can be beneficial for hybrid or onsite job opportunities. By spending time scrolling through profiles and noting down company names, you can create a focused list of 10-20 companies to prioritize in your job search. This helps you to further refine your search by typing in the boolean string again and filtering by jobs, including the company names you have selected. Setting up a job alert for this search ensures that you stay updated on relevant job opportunities and don't miss out on any potential opportunities. Overall, this method allows you to identify companies that actively hire for your target role and are located in your area. It saves you time by directing your efforts!

In 2024, don’t waste time with companies that aren’t going to hire you. What do I mean? Some companies don’t hire for your role. Start focusing on those that do. Here’s how: ____ 1. Type in your target role using a boolean string to capture at least 3-4 variations: Example: ("security engineer" OR "information security engineer" OR "network security engineer" OR "IT security engineer") 2. Filter by people. 3. Filter by your location (start with city and work your way out if necessary). 4. This produces a list of people who work in your target role and who live nearby (I'm doing this because a lot of jobs are hybrid/onsite. You're also more likely to get hired by a local company). 5. Spend 20-30 minutes scrolling through profiles while making note of company names. 6. Pick 10-20 companies to focus on. 7. Now type in your boolean string again: ("security engineer" OR "information security engineer" OR "network security engineer" OR "IT security engineer") 8. Filter by jobs. 9. Add the 10-20 company names you picked previously. 10. Set up a job alert for this search. See what I did there? I found companies that I know hire for my target role and that hire in my area. Then I set up a job alert so I don't miss an opportunity. Give it a try.
