The New Energy Challenge (NEC) is back for 2024! This year's topics are: Industrial electrification and demand side flexibility and battery and energy storage for stationary application.

Energy storage is one of the key #netzero technologies with significant potential for the EU industry. As a production location, technology developer, and driver of innovation, Germany is a frontrunner in the EU for multiple net-zero technologies. It is essential to maintain this advantage and support the development, market integration, and implementation of European innovations. These were some key takeaways from the pivotal workshop in Brussels titled "Boosting the EU’s Net-Zero Technology Manufacturing Industry: Challenges and Policy Solutions" on July 10, 2024, organized by the European Commission's DG Ener and DG Grow, which our colleague Beatrice Schulz attended this week. This event was a key part of the ongoing discussion process stemming from the Net Zero Industry Act, which focuses on identifying best practices from member states and brainstorming further measures to enhance the EU's industrial competitiveness. The discussions also delved into the most effective policy options and regulatory frameworks (including permitting, public procurement, skills, etc.) at both the national and EU levels, as well as public funding options and financial tools for the EU to attract private investments in Net-Zero technology manufacturing projects. The Net Zero Industry Act sets an ambitious goal: achieving a net-zero manufacturing capacity that meets at least 40% of the EU's annual deployment needs by 2030. This objective aims to provide predictability, certainty, and long-term signals to manufacturers and investors, fostering a stable environment for growth and innovation. It's a sprint and a marathon at the same time. The workshop provided valuable insights into the discussions at the EU level and in Germany #BMWK. Bloom Energy, a US solid oxide fuel cell technology company, has struck a new collaboration with Singapore’s Sembcorp Industries Ltd at the 2024 Clean Economy Investor Forum, organised under the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF). The new partnership will explore Sembcorp’s use of Bloom’s proprietary solid oxide fuel cell technology alongside third-party carbon capture technologies to generate reliable, low-carbon electricity for Singapore’s evolving energy requirements. “The Bloom-Sembcorp collaboration will have lasting impacts on multiple levels,” said KR Sridhar, Bloom Energy’s Founder, Chairman & CEO. “Singapore’s established position as a high-tech manufacturing hub will be further cemented as Bloom and Sembcorp provide the low-carbon electricity from the high-tech solid oxide fuel cells coupled with proven carbon capture technologies. The use of carbon capture technology will support Singapore’s progress towards achieving its net-zero emissions target by 2050. We believe this will serve as a model for the broader region, and the world.” Chiap Khiong Koh, CEO, Singapore & Southeast Asia at Sembcorp, added: “Through the collaboration with Bloom Energy, Sembcorp aims to support our customers with low-carbon energy through the deployment of solid oxide energy systems. The demand for green energy is expected to have robust growth, especially in the area of data centers.” The collaboration aligns with Singapore’s Green Data Centre Roadmap, aiming to develop sustainable data centers with increased use of green energy. Bloom’s fuel cell Energy Server, when integrated with carbon capture, will provide low-carbon power to data centers and potentially deliver green energy using low-carbon feedstock in the future. The Energy Servers also have the potential to operate alongside utility power, easing grid constraints. #cleanenergy

Participated in an insightful Stakeholders meeting in Brussels representing Sunlight Group Energy Storage Systems The meeting, organized by the European Commission and CINEA, delved into "Instruments to support battery manufacturing under the Innovation Fund". Battery manufacturing is becoming a strategic priority for the EU, and the Innovation Fund is a critical instrument for the revitalization of the energy manufacturing industry in Europe. In the past years there has been a lot of conversation in the European energy space about the role of #hydrogen as a commodity. However, it’s first important to understand what role can hydrogen already play within the power system complex: whether it’s to improve renewable capture rates or simply provide more flexibility to the grid. It is in this context that I along with Monika Sandelic, Tobias Lindstrøm Jensen with our industrial partners at Eurowind Energy and Corre Energy are looking into the Green Hydrogen Hub project in western Denmark. Of course, once this initial step is achieved, the impacts of hydrogen markets would be considered. This is not a novel approach, nor are we the first people talking about this research area. However, it is right to say that we are definitely among the few that work in this area within the context of an real-life industrial project. This is what makes it so interesting and exciting at the same time!
