Supporting Sustainable Fishing in Sepik: Cooler Boxes for Local Fishers 🌊 FAO, under the EU-@STREIT PNG Programme, has provided essential cooler boxes to 10 fishing groups in the Sepik region. This initiative is supporting around 1,000 fishers, enhancing their fishing practices and market efficiency. 🐠 Key Benefits: • The cooler boxes enable fishers to store their catch longer and maintain freshness. • They help in transporting fish to the market in excellent condition, ensuring top quality seafood. 💡 Making a Difference: • Efficient Market Supply: These cooler boxes assist our fishing groups in managing fish supply more cost-effectively, considering the perishable nature of their catch. • Lower Transportation Costs: This equipment helps reduce frequent, small-scale trips to the market, thus saving on transportation expenses and increasing sustainability. 🌐 A Collaborative Initiative: This is part of the EU-STREIT PNG Programme in Papua New Guinea, facilitated by the FAO, aiming to enhance the livelihoods of our coastal and island communities. 🙏 A heartfelt thanks to all those involved in this significant step forward. What you just saw was blast fishing, a destructive practice that negatively impacts the ecosystem around it, decimating coral reefs and affecting the marine life. Unfortunately, blast fishing is a common practice and problem in #Tanzania and other countries, as explained by this article in Hakai Magazine. On 16 April, Greece became the first EU country to ban bottom fishing at the ‘Our Ocean’ world conference, initially in national marine parks ‘by 2026’ and then ‘in all marine protected areas by 2030’. Sweden is set to become the second EU country to ban bottom fishing in marine protected areas, going a step further than Greece’s April decision by banning it in all territorial waters. https://lnkd.in/dUTBzNTv

As part of the regional IUU project entitled “Combatting Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing in Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana (the Guianas)” 🐟🛑, funded by Oceans 5, a sponsored project of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, WWF-Guianas has been working since 2021 to combat IUU-fishing. As part of this effort, Fishingcleaner.com (Michel Nalovic) developed a regional roadmap 🗺️ to strengthen collaboration and tackle IUU fishing head-on. After numerous consultations and workshops, a final inventory was created 📊 to assess how feasible it is to implement the necessary actions. This work highlights the critical need for joint efforts 🤝 to restore fish stocks and protect the livelihoods of coastal communities. We know that illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing is an issue that affects the health and well-being of our oceans and the livelihoods of Canadians. We were at the Our Ocean Conference recently with international partners to share information and work together to combat this global issue. As the new chair of the IUU Fishing Action Alliance (IUU-AA) this year, Canada will drive global efforts and work with international partners to address IUU fishing with increased transparency and the use of technology.
