Let’s Ride the Wave of AI—A Personal Reflection I have always been in favor of using new technologies, an inclination shaped significantly by growing up under an authoritarian regime that imposed many bans—even on something as simple as watching movies. This experience taught me that outright prohibitions are often ineffective. In the 1980s and 1990s, we teenagers would ingeniously hide a video recorder under a blanket and gather in each other's homes to watch films. These films weren't inherently forbidden; they were banned for ideological reasons. What we sought was merely the joy of exploring diverse genres. From this perspective, as someone of faith and an advocate for technological advancement, I reflect on the capabilities of AI versus the unique qualities of humans. While AI can calculate with unparalleled accuracy and process tasks with incredible speed, it lacks the creative essence and quality only humans can provide—a gift from God, the ultimate Creator. While this requires ongoing conversation and thoughtful navigation, I actively train my students at Fairfield University School of Engineering & Computing to leverage AI to grasp scientific concepts and master new software more swiftly, harnessing the potential of AI to accelerate learning and innovation at our modern Jesuit school, Fairfield University. #ArtificialIntelligence #TechEthics #InnovationInEducation
