I am very pleased to share this wonderful opportunity! Multi‘ōlelo Webinar Series Friday, April 5th, 2024 10 am HST (4 pm EST) Register for Free: https://go.hawaii.edu/ucn Multi‘ōlelo presents a free webinar on Friday, April 5th, 2024, at 10 am HST (4 pm EST). In this webinar, PhD candidates at Michigan State University, Matt Coss and Hyun-Bin Hwang, will talk about their recent project published in Research Methods in Applied Linguistics and further analyses and discussion beyond the article. Please come and join us to learn more about how we can share our knowledge more broadly and contribute to society. Title: Optimizing Applied Linguistics Research for Practical Impact: Strategies for Enhanced Informativeness Description: This talk will begin with a summary of a recent systematic analysis of pedagogical implications in empirical applied linguistics research published in TESOL Quarterly, The Modern Language Journal, Foreign Language Annals, and Language Teaching Research. The main finding from this study was that while all four journals mandate pedagogical implications, these implications are often absent or minimally informative for potentially interested readers, such as teachers and policymakers. A second key finding, derived from a move-step genre analysis of 200 pedagogical implications, identified common features of highly informative ones. Based on these findings, we will present attendees (researchers, journal reviewers, and editors) with a series of recommendations to enhance the effectiveness and informativeness of pedagogical implications in research publications. Specifically, we will present a framework for study conceptualization and evaluation. Following this, we will dissect the move-step rhetorical structure of highly informative implications. At the end of the talk, attendees will have the tools to analyze the pedagogical relevance of and improve the pedagogical implications in their own research as well as provide constructive feedback on pedagogical implications when reviewing and editing colleagues’ work. Ultimately, our aim is to foster a community of applied linguists committed to enhancing the quality of pedagogical implications, and, therefore, the practical impact potential of our research. What is Multi‘ōlelo? Multiʻōlelo is an initiative started in the SLS department at University of Hawaii at Manoa by graduate students. It stands as a vibrant transmedia multilingual platform with a unique mission – to curate diverse language-related content from a multitude of voices in numerous languages. Embracing the beauty of multilingualism and multicultural perspectives, Multiʻōlelo fosters an inclusive space for various forms of scholarly engagement, all readily accessible for public exploration and interaction. You can join this initiative by becoming an author or a reviewer. Please feel free to share this widely and let us know if you have any questions. See you at the webinar! Mahalo, Multi‘ōlelo

One of the things I learned a long time ago was the power of envisioning outcomes. It's funny how the cares of life can side-track things that were once important to you. For me the power of concentrating on what I've been learning on guitar has begun to pay off for me. I'm reminded of a video I watched where Rick Beato interviewed both Steve Vai and Joe Satriani, two of the most fantastic, learned guitar virtuosos of the last 30 years. They really are consider two of the best players. During the interview Vai, who was once a student Satriani's (really they grew up in the same neighborhood) was told by Satriani to know the fretboard the next time you show up for a lesson. Vai walked home, guitar in hand, thinking, "Oh no, I'm not going to do that." Well the next time he showed up for a lesson, the first thing Satriana said was, "Play a G# any where on the fret board." Vai couldn't do it and Satriani told him, "When you're ready to learn the notes on the guitar, come back." Which brings me to myself and my progress as a guitar player. Some nights as I lay in bed, before I nod off for the night. In my minds eye I envision the entire fretboard from one end of the neck to the other. String by string, fret by fret I learned every note. It's paid off for me. I can at any time identify notes across the strings and up and down the fretboard. It's helped learning and playing solos and it's helped me forming chords. I'll be the first one to readily admit I can't name all of the notes in some chords, but if it's a Major or Minor tri-chord I got this. Confidence. Since most rock and country songs are based on the I, IV, V and sometimes a minor Vi, we call it a progression, I've got it. I've applied the same visionary principles with knowing the fretboard to playing tri-chords across the fretboard on any three adjacent strings. Visualization is as important as it is in playing a guitar, or any instrument for that matter, as it is with any undertaking where we need to demonstrate results or mastery. Hope you enjoy this video of these two guitar greats. https://lnkd.in/gk5SSjZg

Something I value and am working on: As we head into the weekend, I encourage you meditate on which category you “think” you are in… and perhaps which category your team would say you are in. If you aren’t inviting your team to the table to contribute their skills, or better yet… creating safe spaces for your teams to do the work autonomously — you might resemble poor Narcissus forever staring in want of that person reflected back in the water. #leadership #mindfulness #teamwork
