A great part of my job is working with some of the incredibly smart reporters and editors who write about us, or the industry. Over the years I've learned that having a binary view of what is or is not a "good" story is problematic, and that nearly always our best approach is to engage as deeply as possible, with all the facts we have. This is often true even when a story might be complicated, or difficult, or even negative. The result still might sting, but if it better reflects our thinking, that's a win for everyone, us, the readers or viewers. Where that approach fails is when it is clear a reporter is not willing to engage or shift a story, and the biggest tell on that is when we are approached for comment and fact checks on a story that has already been written. This is bad faith engagement, since the only outcome is likely a quote thrown into the already written story. Case in point: today, a single quote dropped into an already-written Bloomberg story. Bonus aggravation: a near zero attribution to specific humans throughout the story. https://lnkd.in/gPAb57tf

When a reporter shows interest in a story you're pitching, they usually have to pitch it to their editors before moving forward. But what do you do when the editors decide against it? No isn't always a final answer. Reframe the idea, develop a new relevant angle, and offer an alternative approach. You'd be surprised at how often this results in the coverage you thought you weren't going to get.

One of the most memorable yet funny media interactions I have experienced with one of my clients: Journalist: Asking questions about the company, business model, future plans, etc. Client (To my embarrassment/surprise, holding the printed briefing document): "Your questions don't seem to align with the questions provided here". Story ends!!

The primary responsibility of a reporter is to ensure that after reading his/her report, the reader should be left with no questions on the subject. While this is often challenging, it is by no means impossible. It is crucial for the reporter to anticipate what questions might arise in the reader's mind based on the information provided. This foresight is what truly defines the difficulty of a reporter's task. During my time working on an international assignment, I came to realize that the purpose of my report is to eliminate all confusions regarding the event or issue I have written about. The goal is clarity and comprehension for the reader. However, our practice often diverges from this ideal. Instead of clarity, confusion seems to be cultivated as much as possible!
