⚡⚡⚡CxO Moves: Following Manish Tiwari Stepping Down, Amazon Likely To Bring In Its Senior Executive Samir Kumar To Lead India Operations Senior Amazon executive Samir Kumar, who helped initially set up the India business for Amazon alongside Amit Agarwal, may take up the reins of the company’s Indian business following Manish Tiwary’s resignation, people aware of the move have told The Arc (although Amazon India has declined to comment) 🎯 Quick Commerce Threat Vs. Amazon Strategy “Ecommerce in metros is going through a pivot with a focus on speed. This is the new reality,” said an industry executive. The Arc understands that the company has tasked senior executive Nishant Sardana with developing the quick-commerce play. Sardana’s new responsibility is part of a rejig in the leadership ranks. Until recently, he was handling the company’s smartphones and accessories business. 🎯 Amazon's (Likely) New India Head's Bio Kumar studied engineering at the National Institute of Technology, Rourkela, and got his master’s degree from Utah State University in 1995. Amazon hired him as a systems engineer in 1999. Kumar’s association with Amazon spans over 25 years. He launched the ecommerce giant’s operations in India in 2012-13 until 2016, working closely with the then country head Amit Agarwal. Under a major reorganisation, Kumar shifted to Seattle to lead the company’s export business. The report states that “Lately, he (Kumar) has been more involved with the India team on strategy. He has been asked to get the kind of growth momentum he left in 2016,” said a source. This role would require Kumar to relocate from Seattle to Bengaluru. “(Amit) Agarwal trusts Kumar. The idea is to set the house in order. The last two years have been largely flat (revenue-wise) for us in India, with #quickcommerce eating into our market share,” said a senior #Amazon executive. By all indications, it seems like Amazon India wants to convey seriousness and put to rest questions about its India leadership strategy well before the all important Big Billion Day & festival shopping season sale begins! #executiveleadership #leadershipstrategy #highperformers #toptalent #executivejobsearch #jobsearchstrategies #jobsearch #leadershipmindset #executiveleadership #leadershipjourney

Amazon has redrawn its India business strategy. Its order of priority for different e-commerce segments has undergone a significant change. Amazon certainly required a new plan. The past few years have been tough in India. It was not just the stringent policy climate or the eyeball-to-eyeball encounter with the country’s most powerful corporate group but the challenges on the business growth front too that put the company on a backfoot. Just a little over a year ago, the company retreated from some of the futuristic projects and laid off people. After having flirted with new lines of business such as food delivery and edtech for years, Amazon shut them and initiated a company-wide downsizing drive. In the final weeks 2023, Amazon’s key executives in India huddled together and drew up a plan. Mugdha Variyar and Priyanka Sahay have all the details. Amazon India's Country Head, Manish Tiwary has resigned after an eight-year tenure, planning to leave in October as the company navigates a challenging regulatory landscape. Despite Amazon's ambitious plan to invest US $ 26 billion in India by 2030, it faces strict regulations that limit its operations to being just a marketplace. Additionally, the company is under antitrust investigation for allegedly favouring certain sellers - accusations it denies. With Tiwary's departure, Amazon has not named a successor, though Amit Agarwal for Emerging Markets, will remain involved. Amazon emphasises that "India is a major priority" as it continues to expand in this crucial market. Amazon India chief Manish Tiwary resigns, plans to join another company: Manish Tiwary has resigned as the country head of Amazon India after spending eight and a half years at the e-commerce firm. Tiwary plans to take up a new role at another firm, people close to the development said without disclosing the details. He would remain in Amazon until October, overseeing the company’s festival season, according to sources. The company said Amit Agarwal, SVP India and Emerging Markets, will remain closely involved with the Amazon India team, guiding its strong bench of leaders to deliver on this opportunity. While Tiwary’s departure was being discussed internally, it was made public on Tuesday through an email sent to the India leadership team by Agarwal, sources indicated. It is learnt that Agarwal’s communication pointed out that Amazon has a ‘’strong leadership bench that is ready to step up’’. For Tiwary, who hails from #Jamshedpur, #Jharkhand, it has been a meteoric rise – the trajectory set in place by the emphasis on education, work and frugality in his growing-up years. A computer engineer from #BIT-Mesra, and an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, Tiwary, was expected to follow his parents who worked for Tatas. Instead, he took up a job at consumer goods firm Hindustan Unilever in 1995. At Unilever, Tiwary proved to be a stayer, working with the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) major for over two decades in different capacities and across different categories and channels: in India, in the Gulf and in North Africa. Before joining Amazon in 2016, he headed #Unilever’s business in the #Gulf region, which was a large multi-country operation across diverse legal entities. His last role was as managing director for Unilever (Gulf), looking after a cluster of 34 countries in North Africa and West Asia while operating from Dubai. The role prepped him well for his task at Amazon India, where he now heads an army of thousands of employees. With the pandemic having accelerated the shift to e-commerce, the tech giant is aggressively scaling up its operations. Tiwary’s departure from Amazon is expected to leave a large gap to fill for the e-commerce firm. It is in a fierce battle with rivals such as #Flipkart, Reliance’s #JioMart, and #Tata for a big bite of India’s booming e-commerce market, which is expected to touch $350 billion by 2030. Under Tiwary’s watch, #Amazon was transforming into more than a shopping platform for Indians. The company started out in India in 2013 with 100 sellers. It now has over 1.2 million sellers from across the country. It is focusing on vernacular language and a voice-based shopping platform that aims to be inclusive and accessible to the next 500 million users who mainly reside in “Bharat”, India’s small towns and cities.

Honoured to commemorate India's 75th Republic Day at #amazon 's headquarters in Seattle. Proud of Amazon's steadfast commitment to #india - spawning innovation , economic growth and empowering small businesses and start ups. Not many know that Amazon commenced operations in India in 2004, with 5 software coders cramped in a rented space. They did not even have chairs! Today Amazon has over 100,000 employees in India including its largest campus outside of the US. The Amazon ecommerce markeplace which began with a small warehouse in 2013 had just about 100 sellers, selling only books, at that time. Currently, Amazon has over 1.4 million sellers and close to 43 million cubic feet of warehousing space. Our marketplace now serves 100% of all serviceable pin codes in India, with a majority of customers from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. Here are a bunch of stats I love to reel out: 😀 Today, Amazon Web Services (#aws ) supports 7 out of India's 15 digital public platforms (including Digilocker and CoWIN). Over 80 out of the top 100 market-cap enterprises (Airtel, HDFC Bank etc ) and more than 90 of India's 100+ unicorns (Zerodha, Swiggy) innovate on the AWS platform. It's still day 1 ... Jai Hind! 🇮🇳
