"Whatever the city is doing, we needed more of it yesterday. Many of Scarborough’s roads haven't changed in the last 50 years. It's a matter of political will." Shared some insights with Mahdis Habibinia, regarding the second tragic cyclist death in Scarborough... this year. A gut wrenching story, of a local resident just going about his day. Things need to change so tragedies like this don't happen again, whatever the circumstances may be. Scarborough, is hot right now. I can see it and feel it everyday. More intensification is coming, which will bring more people and with it more demands on everything. Scarborough has so much going for it in terms of its culture, people, and innovation. Never forget, it was the largest and most populous former borough of Metro Toronto. The way people get around has already shifted, along with peoples attitudes towards active transportation, public transportation, and housing. Knowing this, we are going to have to move quickly to re-balance, re-imagine, and retrofit our streets. Residents are calling for and need more options beyond the automobile. This means better walking, safer cycling, and improved transit. The communities that prioritize transportation equity, and public safety, will be nicer places to live, and will stay competitive at both the local and regional scale. https://lnkd.in/gYdQphai #bikeTO #ScarbTO

After years of litigating these issues, our conclusion on how to best pushback against NIMBY political pressure: “Legal victories are good, but can be short-lived as the NIMBYs adapt and find loopholes. In my mind, the best strategy is for vacation rental proponents to unite and organize a state-level political strategy to educate lawmakers on the truths and myths surrounding vacation rentals. A strong case can be made that vacation rentals benefit communities, make vacations more available to all, boost local economies, and advance private property rights. The housing crisis is real, but there are much better tools to solve it than restricting vacation rentals. Organization, coordination, and funding within the vacation rental industry are needed to make an effective state-level pitch.”
In the last of my 3-part series on the short term rental war, I take on the NIMBYs.
