Narcolepsy can significantly impact daily life, causing excessive daytime sleepiness, cataplexy, and disrupted nighttime sleep—leading to a heightened risk of cardiovascular issues, mental health challenges, and cognitive decline. As a sleep medicine specialist, I see firsthand the importance of early diagnosis and comprehensive care. On this day, I stand with those living with narcolepsy and their loved ones, advocating for greater education, empathy, and research to improve the lives of those affected. Per the American Psychiatric Association ➡ An estimated 34 percent of Americans report their sleep quality as “poor” or “only fair. ➡ More than 50 million Americans have chronic sleep disorders. Inadequate sleep affects brain function, leading to fatigue, irritability, and difficulty focusing. It can worsen symptoms of depression or anxiety, while these conditions can also disrupt sleep. Both insufficient and excessive sleep are associated with chronic health issues like heart disease and obesity. Sleep disturbances may signal underlying medical conditions like heart failure, arthritis, or Parkinson's disease. With sleep being such a fundamental part of overall health and well-being, it is still often neglected and treatment options are limited in many cases to medications only despite, per Dr. Colin Espie in the BBC Radio Broadcast below, "All the international guidelines, including UK guidelines, all state unequivocally, that CBT is the treatment of first choice and that drugs shouldn't be provided until people have had a trial of CBT to see if it can help." What's a potential solution? CBT programs for sleep specifically (CBTI) can be difficult for people to to find or access. CBTI-based digital programs like Sleepio, that have been highly tested and proven, should be made much more widely accessible through insurance and employer benefits.
