🌍 How satisfied are expats living in Germany? 🇩🇪 Did you know? Germany ranks 49th out of 53 countries in the Expat Insider 2023 survey, making it one of the least attractive destinations for expats. But why the dismal rating? Takeaways: 🔍 Challenges Abound: Expats face significant hurdles upon arrival, from navigating the country's digitalization woes to grappling with inflexible bureaucracy and a strained housing market. Adding to the struggle, Germans rank among the bottom 5 for friendliness, leaving many expats feeling isolated and disconnected. 😞 Unhappiness Abounds: With only 64% of expats reporting satisfaction with their life in Germany (compared to 72% globally), it's clear that there's room for improvement. The Ease of Settling In Index, which covers local friendliness and finding friends, ranks Germany at the bottom, highlighting the uphill battle expats face in building a social circle. 🤝 Seeking Connection: A staggering 55% of expats find it challenging to make local friends, while 32% lack a personal support network, contributing to feelings of alienation and homesickness. Unfortunately, this trend isn't new—Germany has consistently struggled in these areas over the past decade. 💼 Bright Spots: Despite the challenges, Germany shines in the Working Abroad Index, boasting a robust job market and high job security, placing it in the global top 5. Expats also appreciate the quality of life, particularly the infrastructure and availability of green goods and services. 🗣️ A Mixed Bag: While Germany offers ample opportunities for career growth and sustainability, expats grapple with the complexities of daily life, from language barriers to bureaucratic hurdles. It's up to all of us in Germany to extend a helping hand to fellow expats, especially those who have recently arrived. Assisting with bureaucracy and facilitating the integration of expats into society is not just a responsibility—it's a testament to our values of inclusivity and community. By fostering a supportive environment for expats, we enrich our cultural tapestry and strengthen our bonds as a global community. Together, let's make Germany a welcoming home for all. 🤝 #ExpatLife #Germany #LivingAbroad https://lnkd.in/euizejnn

https://lnkd.in/eMKggWrm Expats in Germany Are among the Unhappiest & Loneliest Worldwide: Expats have a very hard time making friends, finding housing, and dealing with Germany's lack of a digital infrastructure. ... A Less than Welcoming Culture The Ease of Settling In Index (50th) is one of the main pain points for expats in Germany. Infact, the country performs very poorly in all three subcategories of this index: Local Friendliness (50th), Finding Friends (49th), and Culture & Welcome (49th). Three in ten expats (30%) say that people in Germany are not friendly towards foreign residents (vs. 18% globally), and 55% find it difficult to make local friends (vs. 36% globally) Since 32% also have no personal support network (vs. 24% globally), it does not come as a surprise that about one in three (32%) do not feel at home in Germany (vs. 20% globally). Unfortunately, this has been a trend: in the last decade of the Expat Insider survey, Germany has always ranked among the bottom 10 countries for Finding Friends and the friendliness of the locals. ... ... On the positive side, Germany does quite well in the Working Abroad Index (15th). Germany's job market (4th) and job security (5th) make it into the top 5 worldwide. ... source https://lnkd.in/eG9BWTrs

‘Super-cooled’, direct and unfriendly. That is how many expats in Germany apparently see their hosts, according to the headline on a report in the German weekly Der Spiegel on a survey conducted by InterNations. Nearly a 1000 people on assignments responded to the survey. “Expats in Germany are among the unhappiest and loneliest worldwide” is how InterNations sums it up. - Three out of ten expats surveyed don't feel at home in Germany and have no social network. - One in two reports that it is difficult to make friends. - One in three agree the Germans are unfriendly to foreigners living in Germany. - Do you agree? As an expat or as somebody socialised mainly in Germany? - What do these opinions, and others in the Spiegel account, say - if anything - about Germany and Germans? - What do they say about being and living as an expat in Germany and anywhere? - What are the implications for German employers increasingly dependent on expats of different kinds? 1wInteresting but I only partially agree. My business stay in US ( California and Florida) took only 2 and half months this year ( 4weeks in San Fran and 6 weeks in Miami) but overall I didn’t find huge differences compared to some metropolitan EUROPEAN cities. 1 Living costs: same if not less compared to London or Paris 2 Working hours: I think US people are most likely similar to Italians and they are hard workers so also in this case no big differences to me 3 Trasportation: yes, this is true not great at all and most of the time you are forced to use your car 4 Salary: the same if not maybe slightly worst compared to Europe for C Level position ( at least in my sector - Fashion Retail). Overall if I should rank my business stay as expat in US this year, I would give a good 8 ( out of 10) for sure. Cheers!
