In our last annual conference, we were honored to have distinguished professionals from various sectors, including Health and Justice, speak on the topic 'Supporting Sexual Assault Survivors: Trauma-Informed Care and Neurodiversity in Childhood.' One of our chairpersons, Dr. Omar Hashmi, said, 'The understanding we gain about trauma-informed care and supporting children with neurodiverse needs is like a key that unlocks barriers to understanding what’s happening beneath the surface.'" On 27 March, the Council of Europe is holding a conference snappily(!) titled: "High-Level Conference 'Of Unsound Mind': Convention-compliant approaches to the execution of judgments concerning involuntary detention and treatment on mental health grounds". The conference aims to clarify the relevant legal standards regarding rule of law safeguards and conditions in institutions, and also to provide "inspiring examples of Convention-compliant practice". It includes speakers such as practicians working in psychiatric institutions, persons with lived experience, civil society, as well as national and Council of Europe experts. The conference is free and can be viewed via the webpage below.

Legally sanctioned coercion is a consequence of public narrative, philosophical precept, politics, economics, and professional discipline, and often premised on foundational beliefs, hidden from view, that maintain closed systems of thought and practice, which amplify orthodoxy and suppress alternative voices, voices that if heard could lead to greater dignity, liberty, and healing. This panel will explore the breadth of coercion and coercive systems, how these systems interact to transform the law and permit state sanctioned force in “treatment”, and what can be done to bring light to systems often hidden in darkness, and transform them. Objectives We will consider how political and psychiatric systems discipline those who fail to conform to their orthodoxy. How narratives shape the course of coercion. Why, for example, a lack of housing and resources are ignored as antecedents of crime, while the psychiatric history of persons involved in incidents are amplified to justify the weakening of legal standards for involuntary outpatient treatment orders, or other mechanisms of control.
