While Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe is best known for his celestial discoveries made in the 16th century — before the invention of the telescope — he was also an alchemist who brewed secret medicines for elite clients. Now a surprising element found in traces of Brahe's alchemy lab is confounding scientists.

One of the most beautiful clusters of stars is the Orion constellation. Since it is visible from almost any place in the world, the star cluster is renowned by stargazers and scientists. However, there are many reasons that make this constellation very important to astronomers. Orion is a prominent cluster of stars visible during the winter in the northern skies.
What Makes the Orion Constellation so Special to Astronomers?

A Cosmic Perspective Famed astrophysicist Neil DeGrasse Tyson, in his sensational book "Astrophysics for People in a Hurry," coined this wonderful phrase to describe what is the diametrical opposite of “default human perspective.” Pick up the book - it's a great "plane read." Most of us, if we are being honest, start with ourselves and move outward. Family, Friends, neighbors, our cities, our countries, and so forth – as the circles grow and populations increase, the ties that bind these fundamental units of the extraordinary plurality that is human civilization become less and less reliable. Humans like teams and we are a genetically competitive species. So it goes. Tyson posits that if you “flip the script” and think about humanity’s place in the cosmos first, the ties that bind and separate humans immediately dissipate, dwarfed into obsolescence by the enormity of existence outside our small, little circles. That simple act of going from big to small has a naturally calming effect on ones view of whatever locally insurmountable obstacle they might be facing. The answer can’t always be to smash the barrier, win the fight, dominate the enemy or destroy the competition. In fact, lasting solutions rarely emerge from those approaches. Decades before Tyson coined the term, the great Carl Sagan lobbied the US Congress to turn Voyager 1’s camera’s back around and snap the famous photo below in what would turn out to be the probe's final photo. A cosmic perspective of our home so striking in its barrenness that its widely considered one of the greatest photographs ever taken. It's just a pale, blue dot. 6 billion miles away. Adrift in an infinite void. All of us. Together. https://lnkd.in/eZdVKtZy

Al-Zarqali (1029–1087) - Origin: Toledo (modern-day Spain) - Contributions: Al-Zarqali was a prominent astronomer and mathematician who made significant improvements to the astrolabe, a crucial tool for celestial navigation. He also developed highly accurate astronomical tables and corrected previous astronomical data, particularly refining the length of the solar year. His work in planetary theories and observations greatly influenced later astronomers. - Impact: Al-Zarqali's improvements in astronomical instruments and data were critical for both navigation and the understanding of the cosmos. His accurate measurements were referenced for centuries, and he played a key role in the development of astronomy in both the Islamic world and Europe. #Astronomy #IslamicGoldenAge #AlZarqali #Astrolabe #CelestialNavigation #MedievalScience #AstronomicalTables

📡Early Evolution of Planetary Disk Structures Seen for the First Time. Planet Formation May Occur Much More Rapidly than Previously Thought The evolutionary sequence of protoplanetary disks with substructures, from the ALMA CAMPOS survey. These wide varieties of planetary disk structures are possible formation sites for young protoplanets. Image credit ALMA/Hsieh et al. in prep. An international team of astronomers has found ring and spiral structures in very young planetary disks, demonstrating that planet formation may begin much earlier than once thought. The results were presented today at the 243rd Meeting of the American Astronomical Society. American Astronomical Society (AAS) Using data fromALMA, the team captured images of Class 0 and Class I planetary disks, which are much younger than the Class II disks observed by earlier disk surveys. Class II disks are known to have gaps and ring structures, indicating that planetary formation is well underway. 🔗https://lnkd.in/eHSUWBg8

Two of the Milky Way's earliest building blocks identified. Named 'Shakti' and 'Shiva', these appear to be the remnants of two galaxies that merged between 12 and 13 billion years ago with an early version of the Milky Way, contributing to our home galaxy's initial growth. The new find is the astronomical equivalent of archeologists identifying traces of an initial settlement that grew into a large present-day city. #science #astronomy #astrophysics https://lnkd.in/duRsAY8T

Here's a #fascinating bit of #space #news for your Monday -- astronomers have discovered a mysterious celestial body in the Milky Way galaxy! Believed to possibly be a black hole, this unknown object is thought to have the potential to reveal new information about the formation of these supermassive enigmas. However, it might not be a black hole at all... The alternative theory is that, because of its incredible density, it could be a neutron star. With neutron stars being by far one of the densest objects in the universe, it's believed that if a neutron star were to become any more dense, it would become so heavy that it would collapse into a black hole. But what's so unique about this mystery object is that it's simultaneously heavier than the heaviest known neutron star, but lighter than the lightest known black hole! Because of this, scientists will be watching what they're calling the "black hole mass gap" closely as it could be the answer to how black holes are formed! Do you believe that this mystifying entity holds the answers that astronomers have sought for decades... or could it be the discovery of a whole new era of questions? Read more below: #blackhole #astronomy #galaxy #discovery https://lnkd.in/eNS2NhsT

Dark matter is a mysterious substance that fills up a big chunk of our universe. Imagine it as an invisible force, like a ghostly presence that doesn't interact with light. Because it doesn't emit or reflect light, we can't see it directly. However, we know it's there because we can observe its effects on the things around it. One major clue is how it influences the movements of galaxies and galaxy clusters. When astronomers study the rotation of galaxies or the bending of light around massive objects in space, they notice that there's more gravitational pull than can be explained by the visible matter alone. This extra pull suggests the presence of something invisible – dark matter. But what exactly is dark matter made of? That's the big question that scientists are still trying to answer. Some think it could be made up of particles that don't interact with light, while others suggest it might involve changes to our understanding of gravity on cosmic scales. #DarkMatter #CosmicMystery #InvisibleForce #GalacticIntrigue #BeyondVisible #CosmicPuzzle #UnseenPresence #HiddenRealm #AstronomicalEnigma #GalacticPhenomenon #InvisibleCosmos #MysteriousSubstance #Astrophysics #Cosmology #GravitationalAnomaly #GalacticRotation #DarkSideOfTheUniverse #BeyondLight #UnseenGravity #UnknownParticles #CosmicIntrigue #AstroResearch #BeyondPerception #QuantumRealm #CosmicParticles #GalacticInteractions #CosmicDiscovery #BeyondObservation #InvisibleMatter #CosmicConundrum
