Do you ever think back to a project from the past that continues to positively influence the present? It happens to us often. For example, every time we talk about ABACO® – the antibacterial, fungicidal and antiviral coating in thin films – we proudly remember that we were the first to develop this innovative solution. ABACO® is the result of an extraordinary collaboration with prestigious academic institutions such as the University of Navarra (Spain), the Department of Molecular and Translational Medicine of the University of Brescia (Italy) and the University of Campinas (Brazil). These partnerships have allowed us to combine industrial expertise and academic research to develop innovative and safe solutions. Scientific tests conducted by these institutes have confirmed the effectiveness of ABACO® against bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, as well as demonstrating its antiviral properties according to international standards. Our Campus is home to around 60 biotech companies spanning start-up to scale-up as well as the world-leading The Babraham Institute and its experts. Latest research shows that during 2023/24 75% of Campus companies accessed the Babraham Institute’s scientific facilities which include imaging, mass spectrometry, flow cytometry, and genomics. Being co-located with the Institute’s unique research facilities of national importance which have been developed with significant investment from UKRI-BBSRC expedites Campus companies’ own research. It enables them to fast-track their own R&D at greater pace and more cost-effectively in addition to creating connections between the academic and commercial communities on site. You can find out more about the Institute’s services here - https://ow.ly/p5H850Uo9F8 and explore the findings from our Babraham Research Campus Impact Report 2023/24 here - https://ow.ly/VGNg50Uo9F9 #BabrahamImpact #ResearchCampus #FlowCytometry #Genomics

🧪 For our next instalment of the “Ongoing in IMPULSE” series, we’re highlighting Work Package 2: Creating a Repository of Community Compounds! EU-OPENSCREEN has different collections of small molecules available to researchers for screening. One of these collections, the European Academic Compound Library, is sourced entirely from academic chemistry labs. We invite chemists to submit their synthesized compounds to this collection, and in return we bioprofile them and integrate them into in-network screening campaigns! In IMPULSE WP2, spearheaded by Mabel Loza, Geert A. Daudey (BioFarma Research Group / InnoPharma Platform), Päivi Tammela (FIMM High Throughput Biomedicine Unit (HTB), University of Helsinki), and Victoria M. (EU-OPENSCREEN), our Compound Submission Ambassadors are connecting with chemists across Europe and beyond to explain how submitting to this collection accelerates early drug discovery and boosts individual research impact. Here’s who’s working on WP2: 🔸 EU-OPENSCREEN 🔸Leibniz-Forschungsinstitut für Molekulare Pharmakologie (FMP) 🔸Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Czech Academy of Sciences 🔸Institute of Molecular and Translational Medicine, Faculty of Medicine&Dentistry, Palacky University 🔸DTU Chemistry 🔸Fundacion MEDINA 🔸BioFarma Research Group InnoPharma Platform 🔸FIMM High Throughput Biomedicine Unit (HTB), University of Helsinki 🔸i3S - Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde 🔸Chemical Biology Consortium Sweden Karolinska Institutet SciLifeLab 🔸Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis 🔸Centre for Molecular Medicine Norway (NCMM), University of Oslo 🔸University of Oslo 🔸Institute of Medical Biology, Polish Academy of Sciences 🔸Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry, Polish Academy of Sciences 🔸Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research Curious to learn more about IMPULSE? I am thrilled to share our latest publication in American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) Journal of Biological Chemistry entitled “Acidic pH of Early Endosomes Governs SARS-CoV-2 Transport in Host Cells.” In this study, we unraveled a novel role of endosomal pH in regulating SARS-CoV-2 trafficking within host cells. Our findings demonstrate that overexpression of NHE9 disrupts the normal trajectory of spike-bearing endosomes along microtubules, ultimately hindering the infection process. I’m thankful for the continued hard work, dedication, and commitment of my co-authors Mariam Duhaini, Ali Srour, and the invaluable mentorship of my PIs Kalyan C. Kondapalli and Suvranta Tripathy. It has been an incredible journey of growth, gaining knowledge, and fostering teamwork. Check out our full article: https://lnkd.in/g8hTnkJk

Our EU-OPENSCREEN Coordination Manager of Scientific Services, Katholiki Skopelitou, recently attended the PROTEOCURE COST action event organised by our Polish chemistry partner site, The Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics (IBB) of the Polish Academy of Science, Norbert Odolczyk, in Warsaw. ProteoCure brought together researchers from the academic, clinical, and industry sectors across Europe who are interested in developing a knowledge-based network to foster research in the field of #Proteolysis. Proteolysis, the degradation of proteins, is a crucial biological process that directly regulates individual protein levels and ensures the breakdown of abnormal proteins. Dysfunctions in the proteolysis machinery, leading to the accumulation of harmful proteins or excessive degradation of beneficial ones, are associated with various human diseases, including cancers, neurodegeneration, developmental and aging disorders, as well as infectious diseases. During the event, we had the opportunity to showcase our EU-OPENSCREEN services, such as our unique compound collections, our European Chemical Biology Database (#ECBD), and #training activities, which facilitate research in this field. Find out more on our website: https://lnkd.in/eupYtpr ProteoCure provided an excellent platform for exchanging ideas and insights. Stay tuned for updates on our ongoing efforts in this field #EUOPENSCREEN #ProteoCure #Collaboration #Innovation #Research
