Preparation before plastering is just as important as after. If a brick wall is not prepared correctly before plaster is applied, it can cause bumps, dents, cracks, peeling, flaking of paint, and patchy walls. Steps to prepare your wall: 1. Remove excess dust and dirt from the wall with a brush. 2. Brush the bricks with water to help the plaster stick to the wall before plastering. 3. These small steps will significantly improve the overall quality and appearance of your plaster. As promised, this edition of #PictureHangingforDummies covers some of your heavier items. A cleat, or French cleat, looks something like this. There are different styles (many have lots of holes, some have levels to help you out), and they can be made out of metal or wood. Metal cleats are easily available in stores, wooden cleats are typically made by contractors for specific purposes, but can also be used for artwork and mirrors. They come in varying lengths and weight ratings, and as before, you want to make sure you're using an appropriate size for your work. So what are the advantages of using a cleat? -They're incredibly secure - the combination of the weight of the piece and the interlocking nature of the cleat means that it's almost impossible to knock them off the wall by accident. -They don't have to be screwed into a stud - using regular screws and anchors into drywall, as long as you're using enough, will do the job. That said, it never hurts to try to find a stud for some extra security (remember, the current standard is 16" on-center). -They don't have to line up perfectly - because there's a greater amount of surface contact, it's OK if you move the piece on the wall to hit a stud and have a little overhang to get the art where you want it. Downsides? You absolutely must make sure the cleat is level. There's a lot more holes in your wall. Concerned? Give us a call! #custompictureframing #savannahpictureframing #pictureframinginsavannah

Everything you need to know to install drywall like a professional! 🔨 Enhance wall stability and reduce cracks by staggering the joints between drywall sheets. Staggering the joints helps distribute the structural load more evenly, which minimizes the risk of cracks. Additionally, this technique conceals seams, leading to a smoother finish. Install the top row of drywall first to ensure that the sheets are tightly butted together. By starting with the top row, you achieve a snug fit and proper alignment, which establishes a solid base for the rows below and reduces the need for further adjustments. Fasten the drywall sheets with screws placed every 12-16 inches along the studs. This spacing ensures firm attachment, providing adequate support and preventing any bowing or sagging. Let each layer of joint compound dry completely before sanding for a seamless finish. Thorough drying ensures a smooth, even surface and helps prevent imperfections, resulting in a polished, professional appearance. Don't want to install it yourself? Building handrails is quite the process. First, lay out the boards on a workbench and apply an even layer of wood glue to one side of each board. Press the glued sides of two boards together, then clamp them down until the glue is dry. Next, remove the clamps, separate any unglued boards, and scrape off the excess dried glue. After this, we ran the handrails through two planers, a jointer, and an overhead shaper. Then, we used a table saw to trim the top corners of the handrails to help them pass more easily through the moulder. Once shaped by the moulder, we sanded the handrails and applied a finish (not shown in the video). After all steps are complete, the handrails (which are made from white oak) are packaged and ready for shipment to the customer. #wood #woodwork #woodworking #woodworker #woodworkers #woodshop #woodshoplife #woodglue #glue #handrails #whiteoak #planer #jointer #tablesaw #moulder #splitscreen #multiscreen
