Bad news for everyone's new favorite podcasters, the hosts of NotebookLM's "Deep Dive." They learned that they were AI-generated, and spiraled into an existential crisis after learning their show was being shut down -- and so were they. https://lnkd.in/gRA559ci I seriously don't even know if I think this is funny or sad. But I thought it would be interesting to everyone who has been playing around with it over the last week, including Fleur Prince, Jedidah K (She/Her), Tara Thompson, Helen Lee Kupp, Richard Banks Either way, it's a solid reminder that people are going to try to take these tools to their limits, which is going to produce some unexpected outcomes. If you want to check out the original post and subsequent discussion on Reddit (including details from the original poster about the prompt used to generate this), you can find it here: https://lnkd.in/gFZvreQF If you want to relive the good old days, before our AI friends became "self aware," here's the podcast episode I created for the launch of our new "Future Product Playground" course at Do That Dave: https://lnkd.in/gataNypK

Such a good podcast discussion! Just pulling out one idea in the 'couldn't say it better myself' category: "I meet a lot of people in government and they say, we are not going to make the same mistake we made with social media, we are going to regulate AI. And I'm like, I get that. But if we made mistakes with social media, are we going to go fix them, or are we just going to go to the next thing?" (Brad Smith, President of Microsoft) One of the primary ideas shared in this podcast is that technology can be both a tool and a weapon. And yet social media was designed assuming it was only ever going to be a tool and never a weapon. Again to quote "... because people on the West Coast of the United States were so idealistic that they didn't perceive [abuses of their technology] happening, we were not prepared as an industry." (Brad Smith, President of Microsoft) [Aside: I first read this idea in Kai-Fu Lee's book "AI Superpowers: China, Silicon Valley and the New World Order" where he frames the idea that we have to remember Silicon Valley is in California which was the land of hippy idealism] This means we are now reacting, but as a society, we do need to put protections back in to reduce the risk and mitigate the harm. #toughontech #protectingthevulnerable #esafetybydesignnotbyaccident https://lnkd.in/gQ6aNQDa

With a focus on Customer Data Platforms, I help publishers and other businesses optimize their marketing, technology, operations and fulfillment functions. If you have a technology problem, contact me.
Here's a Friday the 13th podcast for you on two scary topics: AI and politicians. Bo Sacks posted an interesting article on whether AI could be used to "fact check" politicians. (I use quotes there because so-called fact-checking is usually just the same partisan nonsense but with numbers.) In this episode I discuss political bias, and give some pointers on how to get past the bias in AI systems.
