Coalition for the Northeast Corridor is thrilled with the announcement of $8.2 billion for ten passenger rail projects across the country through FRA's Federal State Partnership for Intercity Passenger Rail Program. Investments in reliable, expanded train service across the country are crucial in advancing the interconnectivity of U.S. passenger travel by rail. The investments include expansions to the Pennsylvania Keystone Corridor and improving the connections between the Southeast and Northeast corridor. These rail improvements including high-speed investments will help to augment the U.S. passenger rail system as a whole and are a win for rail passengers both in the Northeast and across the U.S.

I just finished reading through the FRA’s long distance study (thank you Infrastructure and Jobs Act!) and it’s exciting. While it’s true that intercity rail works “best” (i.e. generates the highest ridership, encourages mode-shifting, is the most economical) at the ~100-400 mile sweet spot, expanding long distance services will: (1) Immediately benefit millions of Americans with no current rail connections; (2) Strengthen political support for Amtrak; (3) Establish beachheads for higher-speed rail between city pairs unserved by rail today. Thoughtful discussion on RTE Drivetime on the All Island Rail review with Professor Brian Caulfield TCD. Cynicism on the lack of finance, timelines, planning within the report and questions on the overall cost.
