Join the Outreach Committee of the Chicago Chapter of the Coalition of Women's Initiatives in Law to enjoy a rooftop happy hour/brief networking followed by a private movie screening of the award-winning film, “Las Abogadas: Attorneys on the Front Lines of the Migrant Crisis,” on the rooftop of the Rooftop Cinema Club in the West loop. “Las Abogadas” follows the journey of brave female attorneys who, after learning of attorneys who drove a VW bus to intercept 5,000 migrants in central Mexico to offer legal advice in 2018, traveled to and provided legal aid to thousands of migrants and refugees. The film closely follows the protagonists of the film in their legal practice throughout the refugee crises, sharing inspiring stories and footage as they and their clients react to and navigate increasingly hostile laws and policies. Please note, happy hour/brief networking will begin at 6pm, and the screening will begin around 7 pm. The film is approximately 1.5 hours. Register here: https://lnkd.in/ggCZk9Sf

How does your organization use data and storytelling to drive positive narratives and engage stakeholders in the “why” of your mission? We are joined on the podcast this week by Becca O'Neill and Stefanía Arteaga of Carolina Migrant Network who talk about their work protecting immigrant communities through the provision of legal assistance and organizing/advocacy work. This compelling episode will help you better understand the challenges facing undocumented individuals, including the difficulties of obtaining asylum and the ways that enforcement and detention can dehumanize migrant communities. We also discuss how data can drive narratives - both negative and positive - and the importance of storytelling in communicating an organization’s mission and values. 🌐 **Transborder Human Rights: Bridging the Gaps Across Borders** 🌐 In an increasingly interconnected world, the concept of human rights no longer stops at national borders. Transborder human rights issues—whether they involve migration, refugee protection, or cross-border labor exploitation—require legal strategies that transcend jurisdictions. Here are three key challenges and opportunities in addressing transborder human rights: 1️⃣ **Migration & Refugee Protections**: With millions displaced globally, ensuring the rights of migrants and refugees across borders requires international cooperation and enforcement of global human rights standards. How can we improve protections for those caught between nations? 2️⃣ **Cross-Border Labor Exploitation**: From trafficking to forced labor in supply chains, transnational human rights law is increasingly vital to protect workers who fall through the cracks of domestic legal systems. International legal frameworks and cross-border litigation are key tools in this fight. 3️⃣ **Jurisdictional Gaps**: When rights violations occur across multiple countries, ensuring accountability can be complex. Strengthening international legal mechanisms and fostering cooperation between national courts are crucial steps toward closing jurisdictional gaps. Transborder human rights challenges test the limits of our legal systems—but they also provide an opportunity for innovation, collaboration, and global advocacy. How do you see the future of human rights law evolving in this transnational space? #HumanRightsLaw #TransborderRights #MigrationLaw #GlobalJustice #CrossBorderAdvocacy

Modern forms of slavery are everywhere, even if we don't notice them. And refugees and people seeking asylum are at particular risk of exploitation. While the Australian Government has committed to tackling modern slavery, there is: 🔸A lack of proper recognition for the experience of modern slavery and fears relating to modern slavery in the context of assessing asylum claims, as seen in our client Aya's* case 🔸Risk of exploitative practices and modern slavery in Australia for people on temporary visas Here's our outline of recommendations, made in preparation for the Special Rapporteur's country visit to Australia: https://lnkd.in/gNF3z6S7 *Name changed to protect identity Isobel McGarity Mursal Rahimi #refugeerights #humanrights #modernslavery #advocacy #legal

#Pylos9 is not an isolated case. Border violence, human rights violations and the unjustified criminalisation of refugees and asylum seekers have come to be integral parts of the EU’s brutal migration policies in recent years. According to Dimitris Choulis, HRLP lawyer and member of the Pylos 9 defense team, "It is the systematic nature of this violence that has been gradually paving the way for a gigantic humanitarian catastrophe like the Pylos disaster". Notwithstanding that the court verdict on the Pylos 9 case is a crucial step towards justice, the truth about the shipwreck is yet to come to light, and the real culprits are yet to be held accountable. The case is not closed until justice for all Pylos victims and survivors prevails, and our struggle is not over until safe & dignified pathways for people seeking refuge in the EU are secured. We can't stop talking about the deadly violence taking place at EU's external borders -and we won't: HRLP together with #LeaveNoOneBehind will be hosting an online Q&A on July 3rd, 7 pm EST. During the online session, HRLP lawyers Ioanna Begiazi and Dimitris Choulis will be sharing their first-hand insight on the Pylos 9 case, opening up an insightful discussion around systemic border violence, state accountability and the criminalization of refugees & asylum seekers by Greek and EU authorities. European Lawyers in Lesvos (ELIL) ELIL was established in mid-2016 by the CCBE, the German Bar Association (DAV) and 38 other European Bar Associations and Law Societies, with the French Bar Association (CNB) formally joining as a shareholder in 2019. ELIL’s teams of European lawyers have been providing free legal assistance to refugees in Greece (since 2016) and in Poland (since 2022). In total, we have worked with over 450 volunteer lawyers and have assisted almost 20,000 people. You can find out more information on the work we do on our website: https://lnkd.in/dvEFFX3. Thank you very much to the Law Society of Northern Ireland’s members for their ongoing support which has enabled us to expand our work and helped our team uphold the rule of law, defend human rights and provide meaningful access to legal assistance for refugees in Greece and Poland. So far in 2023, we have assisted 3,245 people across three locations in Greece (Lesvos/Samos, Athens and Thessaloniki), including 1,040 children. Arrivals of refugees to Greece have doubled in 2023 (over 40,000 people so far). This is by far the highest number since 2019. The need for legal assistance is increasing as the asylum procedure gets quicker, stricter and more complex. However, many organisations are withdrawing or downsizing. This means that, although the need is increasing, the number of lawyers and our financial support is decreasing. The majority of those who cross the border are put in detention centres, often for protracted periods of time and in extremely poor conditions (including families with young children). At this moment in time we need your support to help us expand our teams in Greece and Poland, recruit more lawyers and provide vital legal support to uphold the rule of law and protect human rights for refugees at EU borders. If you are able to make a donation we would be very grateful https://lnkd.in/d2JErbs
