The Google leak - It's mindblowing 🤯 While the NavBoost ranking system was revealed a while ago during the DOJ trials, these blog posts (below) with new explanations and data are helpful in understanding the concept a bit better - and formulating ways to optimize for it. In my own words: Navboost estimates what behaviour is expected from a user in a query (e.g. percentage of clicks to #1) to estimate if a page is deserving of that position. Google classify clicks based on behaviour (bad clicks, good clicks, last longest clicks, squashed and unsquashed clicks) to define if they're valid for this calculation. I wonder what UnicornClicks and UnicorkUsers are 🦄 If you haven't read these yet, go to a quiet place where you can concentrate and read every word. Don't just skim through it, read in peace, and dig through the files. Rand Fishkin: https://lnkd.in/enea6qJ6 Michael King: https://lnkd.in/eExKHWyD There's A LOT to unpack. I'm hoping more folks will dive deep into these over the next weeks and help us learn more 👀

In 2018, I wrote an article for the then-Distilled blog about how the top few results for higher-volume terms seemed to exhibit different ranking behavior to the rest of search. “The two-tiered SERP,” I called it, and hypothesized that this could be caused by the availability of click data. Fast forward to 2024, and there's this concept of a "navboost query" in the Google leak, and nobody seems to have a concrete definition of it. As you might guess, I have a theory, so I wanted to see how it holds up. You might be forgiven for saying - even if you're right, this is by definition old hat. Not new. That's somewhat true, but also unfair. Being very confident rather than just speculative about this kind of foundational understanding allows us to build a deeper understanding, and tools, and recommendations, and talk about them in a different way.
