I've written about this before, but the digital world will change dramatically if either Google or Apple can get a meaningful #AI assistant live on our devices. #Siri is complete trash. #Gemini is too confined to search (and is also trash). There are some big #privacy issues, and some hard AI challenges to solve, but the moment that one of these two takes everything it knows about me (based on my various device uses), and makes an assistant that "improves" my way of using my device/experiencing my life, the world will change. Its the next smart phone moment. I proposed an experience where I can be browsing Reddit, Inc. on my phone, and my AI assistant offers fact checking for some of the claims being made in a thread. Or, it suggests a product based on my browsing of Amazon (perhaps not on Amazon). Or it alerts me to a coffee shop I frequent en route to a destination at the time I usually drink my afternoon coffee. All of those are sponsored or affiliate opportunities (read money makers) that an end user would appreciate if done well. As wearable tech improves, I don't doubt that we get closer to a truly #augmentedreality . If my #airpods add a song I like to my #Spotify playlist, or a calendar reminder based on my conversation, I may not care that my life is being consumed for marketing purposes. The scariest and most exciting part about all of this is we're not that far off from that future.

What happened last week? Apple Intelligence – the dawn of a new AI era? Despite all the recent announcement, so far, no one outside of Apple has used Apple Intelligence yet - it will not launch until fall 2024 and even then it won’t work on 90+% of the installed iphone base. However, Apple is very focused on personal context and privacy. Imagine you could ask Siri “how long will it take to drive my kid to the sport center the trainer mentioned the other day?” The secure, private index of your activities and content is on your device (iphone), tracking apps and being able to combine them to answer the question above. A cloud based LLM like ChatGPT has none of this context today, Google Search and Meta have bits only. In addition, Apple would have gen AI models run on power-efficient, individual devices paid by the users (not by the CAPEX budget of ChatGPT and the likes). Why it matters? At the minimum, this could lead to a new super cycle of iphone/device sales, at maximum it could shift the entire power dynamic in the gen AI world.

Already posted about this. It seems my vision about 'AI-empowered gadgets' is becoming progressively more consistent. David Pierce on The Verge on the opening says it all "I’m just going to call it: we’ll look back on April 2024 as the beginning of a new technological era." No, this is not an episode of black mirror, but a real product. Humane™ , founded by Apple alumni Imran Chaudhri, unveiled their Aipin, a device designed for interacting with large language models, not apps. You talk to it, you do not type. Its operating system, “Cosmos”, is designed to route your queries to the right tools automatically rather as opposed to download and manage apps. With this device, Humane™ ambition is to strip away all the interfaces we have been used to. A few use cases were showcased in the launch video, as “catch me up” which will summarize all messages / emails, or holding food in front of the camera to get in real time nutritional information. The plan is also to get shopping / retail and navigation capabilities. This is a very interesting step towards “real world AI”, and a future where technology disappears - keen to see how this product will change (or not) the future of smartphones. What do you think? 📱 Tech Tuesday 📱 APPLE TAKES A BITE OUT OF AI WITH ‘APPLE INTELLIGENCE’ Have you ever wanted to schedule a message on your phone? You’ll soon be able to do so—at least on an iPhone—after Apple announced a raft of new changes at the Worldwide Developers Conference in California. Scheduled messages, an enhanced home screen, and a more intuitive Siri were just some of the headline-grabbers from Apple’s annual tech gathering in Silicon Valley. But it was the news of Apple’s much-anticipated AI-powered intelligence system ‘Apple Intelligence’ that largely stole the show. Having fallen behind competitors like Microsoft and Google in the generative AI race, plenty were predicting a full-scale makeover for Apple’s ageing digital assistant, Siri. And that’s exactly what iPhone users will get—with Apple partnering with OpenAI, makers of ChatGPT—to create a new personalised AI system named ‘Apple Intelligence’ designed to make it easier for users to navigate Apple devices. It means that Siri will not only be better able to understand instructions, maintain conversational context, and perform actions inside apps once iOS 18 is rolled out over the coming months, but it also ensures Apple keeps pace with rivals in the AI space. With Siri having first launched in October 2011, many felt it was due for a much-needed makeover. Apple chief executive Tim Cook said the company’s partnership with OpenAI would drive the company’s devices “to new heights” when he opened the conference in Cupertino. Among the other eye-catching changes set to take centre stage are customisable ‘Genmojis’ created with the aid of Apple Intelligence, a new and supposedly vastly-improved Photos app, increased privacy for Passwords, and a more organised Mail app. But it’s the partnership with OpenAI that has generated most of the headlines.
