Last Friday I ventured down to #chicagoboothuniversitylondon for the #sustainableeventsshow featuring seminars from leading figures offering their expert opinion and guidance on a host of insightful topics including ‘carbon offsets - genuine aid or greenwashing’, ‘the carbon footprint of conferences - can events truly be sustainable’, ‘should the event industry give a XXXX about carbon reporting legislation’ and ‘S is for ESG, what of the social element of sustainability’ to name a few. It was great to connect and hear talks from various speakers including Camilla Marcus-Dew - Passionate about Good Business 🌈 , Meg Strahle , Matt Grey, Gabrielle Austen-Browne FRSA (she/her) and to also meet some interesting suppliers such as #worldofzing and their range of fully recyclable 70cl cocktail bottles. There is so much opportunity for the events industry and specifically Sleek Events to create some ripples of positive change. Two members of the Creative Team Emilia Williamson and Paul Watkinson had a great time at the London-hosted Event Sustainability Live exhibition exploring sustainable solutions within the events industry. There were several enlightening talks and discussions, including "Keeping It Simple: Fact-based Strategies Beyond Carbon", which emphasised the importance of data-driven sustainable practices, instead of relying on emotive assumptions. Another highlight was "Navigating sustainability metrics: Decoding event impact assessment for conference organisers", where the speakers presented different strategic approaches to measuring carbon footprints to inform reductive approaches. One hugely significant takeaway was the critical importance of collaborative spirit – the open source sharing of sustainability approaches, strategies and solutions across industries raising the bar across the whole industry.
