This mobile app for your satellite subscription and movie streaming service boasts a clean and intuitive UI/UX design. A user-friendly bottom navigation bar grants quick access to key sections like browse movies, manage subscriptions, and account settings. Scrolling through the browse movies section reveals categorized movie lists and individual movie posters with clear titles, ratings, and summaries. The subscription management section offers a clear overview of available plans and their categories. Linear still has one edge over streaming: undeniable discoverability real estate.  Where streaming is driven by thumbnails and algorithms, linear channels offer routine, guaranteed visibility, and direct content sampling as viewers channel hop (the origin point of current TikTok behaviour?).  Younger skewing traditional format TV series have struggled on SVOD services without these levers.  SVODs grew up from EPGs - I can't think of a more uninspiring UX! Brands and IP have had more luck on YouTube where the platform is tactile, natively understandable, and interactive. Unpacking this a little more as part of a larger article I'm currently writing. Any guesses on what IP I'm referencing?

I find it interesting that news apps (see The Economist, Bloomberg in particular) have better composed and performant UX than streaming apps (Prime Video & Amazon Studios, Hulu, even Netflix). Even more so, the news apps are much more effective at telling the story of the content they are surfacing. Very thoughtful design. I think there are a few reasons for this: 1) News content itself is commodity - everyone more or less has the same source material - so storytelling and context are the differentiators. Streaming companies make the assumption that content is the differentiator. 2) Streaming companies have just become marketing companies. By this, I mean the only thing that moves the business reliably is marketing spend. 3) Streaming companies just don't really care about their customers that much given that customers have X streaming services where X is greater than three. Thus, there is no real competition. Or streaming companies have collectively decided that UX doesn't really matter to the business. Regardless, I do appreciate the thoughtful design innovation in news apps. #ott #streamingvideo #ux #design

🚀 Building a Dynamic Video Streaming Experience with React 🎥 One of the coolest challenges I've tackled recently was developing a dynamic video grid for a real-time streaming application. The goal? To create a layout that seamlessly adapts to different numbers of participants and screen orientations (portrait, landscape, square) while ensuring a smooth user experience. 🛠️ What Makes It Special? Responsive Layouts: Whether it's one participant or four, the grid intelligently adjusts the video size and positioning. For instance, with two participants in portrait mode, the videos stack vertically for a cleaner view. Graceful Error Handling: If a video fails to load, the component detects the error and shows a fallback user avatar—keeping the experience consistent. Optimized for Performance: Leveraging React.memo and useCallback ensures efficient rendering, even with multiple video streams and layout changes. Smooth Transitions: Loading spinners are displayed while video streams initialize, providing a sleek user experience without abrupt transitions. This project was a great opportunity to push the boundaries of React, combining state management, media streaming, and layout dynamics for a responsive and immersive experience. #WhatIf streaming services and mobile telecom operators collaborated to offer a single subscription that includes Data-Free streaming?💡 - From my observations, a lot of Nigerian subscribers feel discouraged from using streaming services because they have to subscribe and then buy more data. This is particularly tough for many users who can't afford unlimited data plans.
