Delegated staking has received significant criticism from the Ethereum community in recent months. In particular, the increase in validators controlled by large staking pools like Lido Finance and Coinbase stoking concerns around centralization of stake and the associated implications for the security of Ethereum’s consensus. Still, it’s safe to assume the staking-as-a-service industry is here to stay—which makes reducing the risk for users of delegated staking services an important goal. EIP-7002 achieves this goal by empowering stakers to withdraw a validator’s balance using execution-layer (0x01) withdrawal credentials instead of relying on the validator’s signing key to trigger an exit from the Beacon Chain. Signing keys are typically controlled by the staking service operating the validator, which means the current exit mechanism requires a staker to trust the staking service to honor requests to exit a validator. In contrast, withdrawal keys are controlled by the staker in a non-custodial staking arrangement—allowing stakers to exit one or more validators and withdraw stake without relying on the validator node operator. This reduces trust assumptions for users and puts the “non-custodial” in “non-custodial” staking (among other benefits).
