We are proud to be a part of the Sips & Sounds Summer Festival event. All the tunes we heard were great, but it was also a huge success in continuing to promote recycling to our local communities. Concertgoers were encouraged to recycle their empty plastic bottles and aluminum cans, and in return they were given swag based on the number of items recycled. All together we collected 20,440 items. That’s 905 lbs. and 656 cubic feet! #1 PET Bottles - 10,200 bottles - 589 lbs. - 400 cubic feet Aluminum - 10,240 bottles - 316.16 lbs. - 256 cubic feet Our dedication to recycling doesn’t start and end with one event. We work hard every day to positively impact our environment. Whether it’s through recycling, water conservation or more, we are working hard to #MakeADifference.

Every time I drive into Houston, I pass by a huge landfill just west of I-45. In the past 2 years, I can certainly see that it's gotten bigger (I thought this was just in my head until my husband made the same unaided observation). Too many people get discouraged and give up once they come to the realization that, at an individual level, there is nothing that they can do to single-handedly move the needle. Are they wrong? Nope. But I think there's a mindset shift that needs to happen. The question shouldn't be "will my actions alone move the needle?"...because let's face it, they just won't. The question should be, "WHAT KIND OF PERSON DO I WANT TO BE?" Do I want to be the type of person who gives a crap about environmental issues, or do I not? From there is where real change snowballs, as we influence others (including corporate decision makers!). Thanks Johanna Walker for shedding light on this very important topic! It certainly made me more mindful of sustainability practices when it comes to industry conferences. .Priscilla McKinney. Kayte Hamilton Alisa (Palmisano) Hamilton I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on this topic. #Sustainability #Conference #ConferenceWaste #Swag #Lanyards #EventProfs #FaceToFaceMRX #Networking #Recycle

These are just a few of the lanyards from recent conferences and speaking engagements headed for the trash. I love the insights gained and relationships built at conferences. I love the opportunity to get on stage and share my expertise. I love being in person at these events! But I do not love the pile of lanyards and swag waste that these events generate. I just learned that the promotional swag industry is $64 billion worldwide. Most of it is cheaply made plastic, with a very short product life, likely made in facilities with poor working conditions. And most of it ends up in landfills. This waste has a huge environmental impact and leaves me with big questions about how I want to participate. I'm not here with answers. Just questions. I'm curious what you do with your lanyards after the conference? And how do you reckon with the swag waste? Do you think about it? What conferences do you know of that are tackling these questions and finding sustainable alternatives? Thanks for the conversation. I'm eager to hear your insights. #sustainability #conferencewaste #swag #lanyards

𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐦𝐞 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡! Shania rolling back the years. Michael J Fox joining Coldplay on stage. Glastonbury had the emotions stirring, that's for sure. Well, for the eagle-eyed among you - or some of you lucky souls who were actually there - you may have noticed something else which has got people talking. A festival on that scale creates waste. So much so that according to some estimates, around 250,000 tents made of polymer-based nylon or polyester are 𝐚𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲, contributing to 900 tonnes of waste. Not good enough. So, to get on top of a pressing issue, we have worked with 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐓𝐞𝐧𝐭, a company that designs cardboard tents, to create a 100% recyclable cardboard tent, which could be a game-changer in the fight against 'tent trash'. Find out more about the benefits of the cardboard EnviroTent here: https://ow.ly/tXer50Sr33s In the market for a tent? You know what to do.

Know before you throw - Have you ever wondered if you can recycle your old Christmas lights? The answer is no, these do not belong in your curbside or commercial recycling bin. These can entangle around equipment in recycling facilities and cause unsafe situations for recycling employees. These need to be disposed of in a trash container, or if you live in the Kansas City area and you have old, broken holiday lights gathering dust in your garage, the Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium will recycle them for you. They’re working to keep environmentally harmful plastic, copper, and lead out of landfills. You can take your old lights to the zoo’s guest relations desk during regular hours (9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.). The zoo will close at 2 p.m. New Year’s Eve and will not be open on New Year’s Day. The last day you can drop old Christmas string lights off is Sunday, Jan. 7, 2024. https://lnkd.in/gW8RTB-P #recycleoftenrecycleright #sustainability #recycling #wearewm

Can we celebrate without inviting plastic to the party? I think so. Check out this blog Mind Your Plastic just posted, written by my colleague Michelle Brake.
Swifties and NFL fans alike can agree on one thing this Super Bowl weekend: we don't need to generate single-use waste to celebrate the occasion. Looking ahead to 2024's most exciting live events, we need event venues and operators, as well as policymakers, to prioritize reduction and reuse initiatives and set the stage for the elimination of single-use waste. Check out Mind Your Plastic's blog below to find out about some of the great work happening in this space and why reuse is essential. 🏈 🗑 🌎 https://lnkd.in/gGNXiysE #superbowl #reuse #singleuseplastic #reduction #liveevents #plasticpollution

Grabbing a quick beverage to go? Did you know that some communities, restaurants, venues, and hotels accept paper cups for recycling? Check locally to see if paper cups are accepted. If so, remember to remove the plastic lid before recycling. Some restaurants allow customers to bring their own refillable mug. Ask your coffee shop on your next stop. Happy Hot Chocolate Day! #recyclerightga #papercuprecycling
