Last week during the SEA Agri-Food Roundtable 2024, we dived into the theme of 'Building Biodiverse & Resilient Food Systems for Asia', with the pressing question : How can the integration of regenerative agriculture system protect our natural resources and biodiversity while supporting human lives and livelihoods? Below are the insights that we discussed during the panel: 🌿 One amongst major challenges to building resilient food systems is the significant drop out of the farmers, particularly small farmers. This issue stems from the ongoing decline in farmers' profit margins due to rising input costs such as fertilizers and seeds, while their incomes from selling produce remain stagnant or showing only marginal increase. Additionally, the unpredictable climate & weather patterns pose risks to crop stability, further exacerbating the situation. 🌿The Regenerative Agriculture practices can help smallholder farmers adapt to climate change, reduce input costs, and achieve more stable yields over time. Consumer interest in sustainably produced foods and their shift to healthy food is increasing, leading to growing demand for products from regenerative agriculture. Smallholder farmers who adopt these practices may be able to command better prices, build direct relationships with consumers through farmers' markets, community-supported agriculture, and online platforms. 🌿Climate Finance Allocation is still insufficient: Only 3% of climate finance is directed towards food systems. Amplifying this investment could result in regenerative and agroecological practices getting into full transition to sustainable practices by 2050. The projected return on this investment is high and promising, resulting to a significant impact on global food security. 🌿The inclusive and collaborative approaches are highly needed: Collaborative dialogue and Collaborative action need to move beyond the business as-usual- mindset to drive #ClimateImpact at scale in our agri-food systems and building resilient food system. Addressing these issues requires a concerted effort from all sectors; including the corporations, government, NGO. 💡 The private sector is uniquely positioned to drive forward a transition towards more sustainable, equitable and resilient food systems. If the agrifood sector invested just 2% of its annual revenues on climate initiatives, it could cut food systems emissions in half by 2030. This investment is tiny, when you consider how integral this could be to our collective future. A critical point is for companies to recognise that the burden of implementing these solutions does not fall equally across value chains. Farmers, who are the least able to pay and carry most of the implementation risks, face disproportionately higher costs relative to their revenues. Greenhouse has supported the impressive team at the Food and Land Use Coalition (FOLU) , WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development and the We Mean Business Coalition to launch their Future Fit Food and Agriculture reports. FAIRR was delighted to host a panel on Food Day at #COP28, exploring the potential, credibility, and synergy across different solutions required to transform the food system sustainably.     FAIRR’s Senior Technical Specialist, Sajeev Mohankumar. PhD, moderated an experienced and diverse panel of industry experts, including Henry Dimbleby, UK National Food Strategy Lead, Sara Farley, The Rockefeller Foundation, Gus Guadagnini, The Good Food Institute, and karen Mapusua, IFOAM - Organics International    The panel engaged in an open and honest conversation and highlighted how different solutions must come together along with government, corporate and investor support.     Some key highlights below:    🔹 Despite the potential of #RegenerativeAgriculture, credibility continues to be an issue. However, initiatives like Regen10 and the recently launched #ActionAgenda on Regenerative Landscapes are helping resolve concerns around the credibility and scale of projects. 🔹 Local solutions, such as redirecting land used for animal feed (such as soy) towards plant-based products, could reduce the health and environmental impacts of conventional protein production.  🔹 Costs and standards can be barriers to entry within organic, but this stems from bureaucracy. Participatory guarantee systems are a move in the right direction, with standards developed by farmers and consumers together. 🔹 Current production creates two times the number of calories from less land than in 1945 but comes with a heavy toll on the environment. Change needs to come from a spectrum of solutions that include reducing the amount of #food we throw away, improving the efficiency of #farming and eating less #meat. 🔹 Farmers need transition support with bold and patient capital. This needs to be combined with changes in conventional business practices like better procurement and offtake relationships. We know that one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions stem from the food systems. At the same time, food systems are deeply affected by #climatechange. How could the introduction of #regenerative agricultural systems protect natural resources and biodiversity across the region, while saving lives and livelihoods?   Last week, we delved deeper into the nuances of 'Building Biodiverse & Resilient Food Systems for Asia' at the SEA Agri-Food Roundtable 2024, organized by Thai Wah Public Company Limited, Temasek and Rethink Events.   Here are a few points I raised:   👉 Only 3% of climate finance is allocated to food systems and an even smaller fraction to farmer, fisher, or Indigenous-led organizations. Investment at the scale proposed would mean half of all food produced could be regenerative and agroecological by 2040, and all would be transitioning to more sustainable approaches by 2050. The return on this investment is projected to be high and exponential.    👉 Regenerative farming principles, often embedded in indigenous practices worldwide, have existed for thousands of years. When braided with fresh innovations, these principles offer direction and hope for a planet grappling with the extremes of climate change and an industrialized food system.    👉 We need to fund anticipatory action, focus on funding localization, crack siloes and put under-utilized working solutions to the test in a real-time situation of food insecurity.    👉 Lastly, every policy, program, and approach should integrate three essential elements: a gender perspective, the meaningful inclusion of those most directly affected by food insecurity, and intensive collaboration.   Do you know of organizations working in the regenrative agriculture space?
