Great article giving advice for each age group. Bottom line and reasoning for the future: Coding is one part of digital literacy that has the potential to “inoculate us against fatalism. Those who understand how a program is built and why are less likely to accept its design as inevitable" (O’Gieblyn, 2023). Today marks the end of National Coding Week. But is it really still important to teach kids coding? A friend of mine suggested that maybe with the growth of AI we don’t need to teach kids to code. It’s an interesting question. A lot of people think AI will very quickly get better at coding than people are. How autonomous that will be is still open to discussion. That said, she’s not wrong. AI could help everyone become coders. In fact it could quite quickly probably do a better job at programming. Less bugs, faster, less pool table breaks. So why bother teaching kids to code? Personally I think coding shouldn’t be a extra curricular subject. I think it should be taught as a core subject starting in year 2 along with maths, English, history, art and music (yes art and music should be core too!). And I don’t think AI should change that. After all we have calculators but we still make kids learn their times tables. Not every kids will go on to do advanced maths and calculus, but they’ve been given the basics. Just like not every kid will become a writer, but we all learn to write. And despite hand held computers with spell checkers we still teach kids handwriting and spelling. The same thing should happen with coding. All kids should learn how code is created and play with it themselves. In fact with AI it’s even more important to understand how to code so you can know how AI is being built, trained, and used. Everyone doesn’t need to become a software engineer. Teaching coding to school students should be more about: - Breaking down coding concepts into digestible sections and fun exercises. - Cultivating creative problem-solving skills and logical reasoning. - Nurturing their curiosity and encouraging experimentation. - Customising teaching methods and pace according to each student's learning ability. I’m currently in my second and last year of college, and planning to head off to university next year. But, I’m feeling a bit anxious about my skills. 🤔 Am I good enough? This nagging worry keeps creeping in, especially about what’s expected as I transition to university. Just the other day, I got a distinction in my Computer Science course, which is awesome, so that’s a confidence booster, right? 🎉 But still, I can’t shake off the feeling that I might not know enough to keep up with others. So, I’m curious to hear from you all: How much coding knowledge do you think universities expect? Do you think it’s common to feel this way, especially as a self-taught coder?
