Are you hiring new crew members ahead of the busy summer season? Ensure your induction training is effective and hands-on, covering their duties, key operations and emergency procedures. That’s for everyone’s safety. A recent industry survey was conducted as a safety initiative by the Office of Transport Safety Investigations (OTSI) to support DCV operators and crew to improve safety practices aboard their vessels. Key recommendations from this research include that: - Casual crew members should be provided with more formal and practical induction training for longer periods. - Following induction training, ongoing instruction from experienced crew/masters would be beneficial for new and casual crew members. - Induction training should be tailored to the vessel and its operation, highlighting differences affecting safety such as different layouts and capabilities/equipment. Learn more about the research and key findings here: https://ow.ly/o3XU50Qg9Vb Remember, induction training is now also a legal requirement. Need some guidance? Something that is quite typical amongst us as professionals is that we sometimes tend to ignore the companies safety booklet.🤣🤗. We assume we know all that is in it because day to day, we employ safety procedures and dressing at work. But today, I realized that's not it... There are specific details about safety which we do not know of and may give us trouble someday. Did you know that there's a specific tonne (weight rating) for the safety harness we wear for work at height? And that the weight of the worker must be considered before putting it on? I got to know that when I decided to read the companies safety commandments today. Try and read your companies safety rules to. You could discover something about safety you never knew of. Have a good week!! #safety #hse #safework #safetyatsea #shipboard #mariner

Interesting updates to the OEUK ORA guidelines as this now includes some Human Factor topics. One of the challenges is that duty holders will have to determine: 1, What Safety critcial procedures are covered by the guideline (through HF screening). How they are going to identify changes to SC procedures and gaps. 2, Minimium crewing or manning levels. Very often the baseline minimium crew level is unknown and very often the SMS and system have differing crew levels or at times non stated e.g. number in a fire team or coxswains. 3, Training & competency, if the above is unclear then how is the training & competency aligned and fulfilled?
