I absolutely love CodeSandbox and have spent time looking into how they could replace Gitpod in my workflow. Sadly, they are not profitable and the new pricing model is dangerous. The free tier used to have unlimited sandboxes, now limited to 20, then 50 for $9/month, 100 for $45/month, and 500 for $250/month. The problem is not the price but the impact on how people use the platform. The change discourages activity on the platform. "I don't dare press that fork button as I only have 5 sandboxes left! Better hold off." CodeSandbox's issue is that enterprise companies often have thousands of active sandboxes but don't pay for them. Hobby users my have hundreds of sandboxes but only a handful are active. The new model aims to make large enterprises pay, but it risks damaging an ecosystem largely made of hobbyists. A better solution could be a usage-based pricing model, like "monthly active sandbox" (MAS). For instance, limit to 20 MAS, defining MAS as a sandbox visited at least once in a month.
