More and more builders that we speak to see the value in working towards a 5-day week, in keeping their staff happy and more energised. They acknowledge the disparity between on-site working hours and that of office-based staff. They are trying as close as they can to create a 5-day work week in an industry that does not have it a standard. That bodes well for the future.

Over in the US, some companies are considering moving to a 6-day mandatory working week. Here’s what I had to say when asked to comment: “Andy Nisevic, the director of One Degree Training & Coaching Ltd cautions employees to know that the number of company leaders actually looking to implement a six-day workweek would be very low. And for those that do, backlash is bound to occur. "It may have a short-term increase in productivity, but when balanced against staff morale, motivation, and retention it's unlikely to be sustainable," Nisevic told Newsweek. "With a higher number of businesses exploring options to offer more and more flexibility, and four-day weeks, there's a huge risk of becoming unfavorable in talent.”recruitment." Thanks for highlighting this conversation John L. Sorenson, MBA . it's interesting to consider when farming is already a 6 or 7 day a week profession. As others have. indicated, retail is open 6 or 7 days though individuals may not have shifts every day or even 40 hours of work. On the other hand it also reminds me of the factory environment of the 1800 and 1900s in America when children and families worked in harmful settings that triggered child labor laws and health requirements. But I'm not naive enough to think that worldwide there aren't already long hours and unhealthy work environments even today... It will be interesting to see how these economic alternatives play out by the companies and the employees.

One of the latest HR BREW articles offers valuable insights for companies considering a transition to a four-day workweek. HR Brew spoke with three leaders whose companies have adopted a shortened workweek. Here are their key takeaways and advice: Defend and Enforce the Decision: "If you’re doing this, or any change, you have to rigorously defend that decision and enforce it. Otherwise, everybody might remember it for a month, but then suddenly somebody is texting you on a Friday because they’re just used to doing it." Adaptability is Key: A four-day workweek may not be realistic for all employees. Codeword implemented “soft Fridays,” allowing employees to decide how and if they work on Fridays.
