🌱 Had the honour of representing the Donau Soja Organisation at Trend&Hedge Club this week. I shared insights on critical EU developments impacting the oilseeds market. Surely, we discussed the 𝐄𝐔 𝐃𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 (𝐄𝐔𝐃𝐑) and its crucial pillars: compliance starting at the farm level, 📍 geo-coordinates, 🌳 deforestation verification, ✅ legality checks, and 📜 certification. On top of this, I emphasised the 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 (𝐂𝐒𝐑𝐃) requirements, where emissions and reductions, including supply chain impacts (Scope 3), must now be measured and reported. This means transparency and a move away from greenwashing – actions must align with verifiable environmental impacts. Our commitment at Donau Soja Organisation remains strong as we support producers through certification and data solutions to ensure a European, traceable, deforestation and conversion-free, sustainable supply chain. #Sustainability #GreenDeal #EUCompliance #EUDR

🌍📈 Today, we co-hosted an event alongside MATS H2020 and the International Institute for Sustainable Development, on exploring novel modeling approaches to agricultural trade policy analysis and bridging the crucial gap between scientific research and policy-making. We're excited to share the outcome of this collaboration: a Joint Statement titled "Leveraging Opportunities for Better-Informed and More Sustainable Agricultural Trade Policies Through the Use of Systemic Methods." In this statement, we reaffirm our commitment to fostering a more sustainable and equitable food system. We recognize the pivotal role that agri-food trade plays in enhancing global food security and driving economic growth. At the same time, we are conscious of the complex trade-offs between trade practices and the multifaceted dimensions of sustainable development, including environmental, social, and economic factors. We advocate for a reinforced approach to agri-food trade analysis to address these challenges. This approach should integrate sustainability considerations and enable a more comprehensive, evidence-based assessment of trade policies. This is to ensure that trade policies are in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and promote a resilient, inclusive food system for all.🤝 #SustainableTrade #AgriFood #TradePolicy #SDGs #EUH2020 #Sustainability #FoodSecurity #InclusiveGrowth

For Africa and particularly for coffee-exporting countries, sustainability is an urgent commercial imperative driven by regulations in large export markets like the EU. When we talk to African exporters and entrepreneurs, smallholders and economists, it is clear that the coffee sector offers the ideal use test case to develop a digitally-enabled, sustainable solution that advances climate and economic goals in tandem for the region. https://lnkd.in/es-gfRVv Aliza Marcus Nina Zegger Ahmad Slaibi

EU lawmakers have introduced the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which will ban goods linked to deforestation starting December 31, 2024. This regulation targets key commodities like cocoa, coffee, palm oil, soya, rubber, cattle, and wood. To comply, land parcels must be monitored using precise geolocation data to ensure no deforestation has occurred after December 31, 2020. Bext360 can conduct satellite checks to verify whether deforestation has taken place and provide traceability to prove that products originated from those verified parcels. Act now to ensure your supply chain meets these new standards. Bext360’s cutting-edge traceability technology is here to help businesses stay compliant. We’re dedicated to supporting sustainable practices and ensuring transparency in supply chains. Stay tuned for more updates! Interested in learning more? 🌍 The Sustainable Commodities and Land Use Forum 2024 organised by Innovation Forum, and which ended yesterday, gathered companies, civil society, and government representatives in Amsterdam for a two-day event, with discussions covering various topics, including the challenging preparations for the EU Deforestation Regulation implementation. Our colleague, Joana Faggin, from our Deforestation-free Supply Chains team, attended the first day of the event and shared a key takeaway: while the EUDR is seen by many as both an opportunity and a source of frustration, it raises an important question: “Is the EUDR an 'opportunity to be frustrated,' or is it already a 'frustrated opportunity'?” Joana emphasised that strengthening transparency is crucial to address the challenges in commodity production and trade and to improve accountability. Collecting quality evidence that demonstrates real impacts on the ground and guides effective mitigation strategies requires collaboration and open dialogue with local organisations, companies, governments, and communities. Right now, while some companies are diligently preparing for the EUDR and express disappointment over the proposed postponement of its application, many are still focusing on the risks to their business-as-usual approach instead of taking proactive measures to ensure their supply chains are free of deforestation, illegal practices, and human rights violations. AidEnvironment remains committed to promoting transparency and fostering collaboration to build more sustainable supply chains. 💡🌿 #Sustainability #EUDR #SupplyChains #DeforestationFree #AidEnvironment
