Lets talk about Youth Justice Centers! Facilities that resemble home-like, non-correctional environments can have a positive impact on healing, and reduce institutionalization. Jurisdictions such as Missouri, Massachusetts, and New York have shifted toward placement facilities that have home-like environments that lend themselves to high expectations and a more therapeutic, developmentally appropriate environment. These programs focus on normalizing young people’s daily lives as much as possible. This approach recognizes that facilities are better served by teaching youth skills to apply in a typical day-to-day setting as opposed to focusing on youth’s ability to follow institutional rules. Call me to discuss your next project! 🙌

DC's early education system is simultaneously 1) one of the best and most comprehensively funded in the US....and 2) the least effectively understood in terms of its housing, educational, and labor market context. (Would also note that too many of us in DC take its best parts for granted.) Valuable stuff from D.C. Policy Center.
Affordable, high-quality housing is necessary for all to lead thriving lives. At the D.C. Policy Center, Chelsea Coffin and I have written a three part report focusing on the housing challenges in the context of early childhood educators in D.C. Part I is officially out, and in this first part, we examine where early childhood educators work in the District!

Why Early Education Matters: Amazingly, the brain doubles in size during the first year of life. By age 3, it reaches about 80% of its adult size, and by age 5, it's nearly 90% fully grown. As the command center of the human body, the brain plays a crucial role in early development. ❝The truth is, community colleges and early care and education are extremely vital and worthy in their own rights, providing foundational support to children, families, and students,❞ Warfield said. ❝They are distinct and noble spheres that increasingly require our collective attention and advocacy, and we must find common ground to allow the two to lift one another up for the sake of children’s health, family well-being, and economic mobility.❞ Read more: https://lnkd.in/gQcSw7Py
