Study released in #JAMA Pediatrics this week: ✔ Data from 144 studies of early childhood #autism featuring 9038 children ✔ Is the amount of intervention provided to young autistic children associated with improved child development? ✔ Analysis to determine whether the effects of common interventions were associated with intensity, duration, or cumulative intensity - thus intervention amount v intervention effects. Before we get too bent out of shape over this article, let's consider the recommendations for individualizing the treatment plan to align with the child's needs: Intensity of service, hours per week, and length of stay to meet the goals of the family. More isn't always better, yet some children do require and benefit from 30+ hours of #ABA. I am a "big fan" of decision models that provide a standard approach and prescriptive dosing to determine intensity and duration. In a field where the majority of practitioners have less than three years of professional experience, these types of tools provide a foundation for aligning treatment plans with measured processes. We have our work cut out to demonstrate in the meta-analysis world how to address computing the impact of our single subject measures across various studies to systematically assess the benefits of EIBI.
