Interesting article on tips to help individuals build as a team. In my experience, I rarely see relationship skill building as an initiative in most companies, even though the interactions of team members is a key driver to the overall health and growth of organizations. https://lnkd.in/g7K6Uyac

Human relationships are at the core of our working lives. To me, those relationships grow faster and are stronger when there is an element of fun involved. Welcoming new team members in a good way is a critical moment for building and strengthening relationships across a work team. For me, a "good way" means creating opportunities to share a bit of ourselves in ways that are playful and capacious - having space for different degrees of participation and sharing. Last week, Alexandra Suchman shared a great post about the power of games in onboarding and I had a great conversation about onboarding with Andrea Guertin, so I thought I would share one of mine! My favourite welcoming activity is called "Ask Me". I learned this from the amazing Krystyna Kongats. It takes an hour and I've always done it virtually, but it would work just as well with physical post-its. The set-up: ✨ Create three big circles or squares on Miro or another virtual whiteboard ✨ Add a question to each circle: 1) What is your role? What is something a team member can ask you about? 2) What is an interest or hobby that others can ask you about? 3) What is a current question about your role, or something you're wondering about our organization? To play: ✨ Start with a warm-up to get people smiling. Keep it fast and quick. I like "What's on your desk?" ✨ Give participants five minutes to answer each question with on a sticky note and place it in the appropriate circle. ✨ One question at a time, ask people to read their answers. Invite additional details and follow-up questions. For third question, about the organization, do your best to answer these live and follow-up as needed. I've used this activity several times over the past three years. Each time, we have found connections between team members' interests. Each time, some sort of new collaboration has come out of the conversation. Crucially, this activity creates a lot of space for the kinds of answers and level of detail team members' provide. It doesn't ask for deep secrets or even personal goals. And certainly doesn't ask for truths and lies (fear not, Jan Keck, I would NEVER!) As a manager, this activity also gives me the opportunity to field questions from new and longer term colleagues. While we meet weekly as a group and 1:1, this activity creates space to ask bigger picture questions about strategy, direction, and goals. Do you have a favourite way to playfully and capaciously welcome new team members? #Facilitation #Onboarding #Fun #Leadership #HumanConnection

Let me tell you something I’ve seen time and again: when people form genuine friendships at work, magic happens. These relationships build a sense of belonging and loyalty that no paycheck can buy. When your employees feel like they’re working with friends, they’re not just showing up for a job—they’re showing up for each other. And that’s a game-changer. The Data • Gallup found that employees with a best friend at work are seven times more likely to be fully engaged in their jobs. That’s right, seven times. It’s like pouring rocket fuel into your company’s engine. • Harvard Business Review reported that employees with strong workplace friendships are 35% less likely to even consider leaving. They’re in it for the long haul, not just until the next headhunter calls. Why It Matters We’re living in a world where work is no longer confined to an office. Remote and hybrid setups are the new normal, and that’s made it harder for those organic friendships to flourish. But here’s the thing: they’re more important than ever. In this new reality, it’s on you, the leaders, to foster these connections. Because when your team feels connected, they’re not just productive—they’re unstoppable. Here’s the playbook: 1. Prioritize Team Building: Forget the trust falls and cheesy icebreakers. Focus on creating real, meaningful interactions. Whether it’s a virtual coffee chat or a shared challenge, make it fun and authentic. 2. Create Spaces for Connection: Even in a remote world, you can create “watercooler moments.” Use technology to build spaces where people can connect about things beyond work. You’d be surprised how much a Slack channel dedicated to hobbies can do. 3. Encourage Cross-Pollination: Get your people talking to each other across teams. You never know where the next great idea—or friendship—will come from. 4. Celebrate Milestones: Don’t just focus on the big wins. Celebrate the personal milestones too. When someone feels seen and appreciated, they’re more likely to stick around. 5. Lead by Example: As the leader, you set the tone. Show your team that relationships matter to you. Be approachable, be involved, and don’t be afraid to show a little vulnerability. At the end of the day, it’s the relationships within your company that will define its success. Sure, compensation and culture matter—but it’s the friendships that will keep your people engaged, motivated, and loyal. I’ve had the privilege of bringing together teams at countless companies, and the real magic happens when those connections turn into genuine friendships. I’ve seen it over and over—when people truly bond, they don’t just collaborate, they create something extraordinary. There’s nothing more rewarding than watching those friendships transform a group of individuals into a powerhouse team. That’s where the magic is.
