"Outside the space domain, development and procurement programmes for airborne platforms have been and remain among the most complex, most challenging and most expensive of #defence undertakings. Hitherto, these have been almost exclusively centred on traditionally crewed platforms, though that is changing dramatically as sixth-generation development programmes accelerate and begin to gel around operational concepts and technology insertion. What has not changed, however, is the scale of the challenges facing developers - and operators - in trying to define,, understand and meet the operational requirements of tomorrow’s aerial battlespace. Also unchanged is the debate as to how comprehensive do solutions need to be, and the even more complex debate regarding collaborative development as a potential panacea for challenges ranging from technological capability to budgetary restrictions. MEASURING WORKLOAD AND SITUATIONAL AWARENESS IN FIGHTER PILOTS The next-generation Air Force is characterized by a shift towards information-heavy and networked operations, facilitated by advanced sensor and display technologies, increased automation, and datalink capabilities. In the Defence research programme ‘V2306 Next Gen Aircrew Performance’, TNO and the Royal Netherlands Air Force’s Centre for Man and Aviation (RNLAF-CML) investigate the human factor aspects of these next-generation technologies and concepts of operation. Recently, TNO conducted a simulator experiment with fourteen fighter pilots using the high-fidelity multiSIM F-16 flight simulator in Soesterberg, NL. During missions of varying complexity, both workload and situational awareness were measured using a monitoring suite with physiological sensors, including EEG (brain activity), ECG (heart rate), skin conductance (stress level), and eye tracking (visual attention) as well as behavioral responses to events in a simulated flight. The relation with next-generation operations was achieved by varying the datalink functionality between missions. The collected data will be used to validate a predictive model on cognitive performance, which can be used to evaluate the impact of new technologies and concepts of operation on the pilot’s workload. This work is part of the AEOLUS ecosystem, a collaboration between RNLAF-CML, TNO and aviation industry, located at the Human Tech Campus in Soesterberg, NL. AEOLUS is a joint innovation center on human performance under extreme conditions in military aerospace. Bridging current and future technologies is essential for defence and international stability. This is the aim of the Eurofighter programme., the most important industrial collaboration project in aeronautics, which involves four nations (Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom and Spain) and three partner companies (Leonardo, Airbus Defence and Space and BAE Systems). In the current scenario, characterised by increasing instability and the constant development of new technologies, the Eurofighter Typhoon has consolidated itself over the years as a fundamental European security asset, becoming the true backbone of air defence. The goal of the programme – in which Leonardo participates with a 21% share, rising to 36% if considering the construction of the aircraft airframe, avionics and on-board electronics – is to develop new elements to make the Typhoon an aircraft capable of handling highly complex missions. A bridge between current and future technologies, but also a system capable of operating in a multi-domain ecosystem, interacting with elements ranging from the physical operational scenario to the cyber and electronic world.
