It was a great session yesterday at #ONSHOREWIND24 covering all things CfD and market reform. With AR6 results announced on Tuesday morning, there was a lot to discuss. Key takeaways for me were: ⚡️The CfD provides a crucial route to market for onshore wind and will be the driving force behind deploying the capacity required to reach 2030 targets. However, AR7, AR8 and AR9 will have to deliver far more capacity than AR6 if these targets are to be met. ⚡️In terms of reforming the CfD, there are several quick wins the UK Government could implement to enable accelerated deployment including longer contracts, more flexibility over delivery years and capacity targets for each auction. A budgetary minimum for onshore wind could also play a key role in ensuring more capacity is brought forward in future allocation rounds. ⚡️ With reforms which would jeopardise onshore wind deployment still on the table, the UK Government must urgently provide clarity on major REMA policy decisions. It is also unclear how an increased role for strategic planning should interact with market reform - much more thinking to be done in this area! Thanks to all our panellists for an insightful discussion. Suzanne Clifton Paul Moran Kate Dooley Simon Gill Scottish Renewables RenewableUK
Next at our Onshore Wind Conference, co-organised with RenewableUK, we delved into the financial landscape of the sector with Suzanne Clifton, Onshore Wind Principal Investments Manager, EDF Renewables UK & Ireland; Paul Moran, Mergers and Acquisitions Manager, ESB; Kate Dooley, Policy and Regulatory Affairs Manager, RES and Simon Gill, Energy Systems Consultant, The Energy Landscape. The panel discussed the wins from the Contracts for Difference (CfD) results announced yesterday by the UK Government, while analysing what needs to happen to the mechanism, pot sizes and electricity market to support mass deployment and a sustainable net-zero energy system. Strategic planning that embraces a holistic view of the diverse elements that will constitute our future energy system was a central theme of the conversation as our panellists looked at the past, present and future financing of onshore wind. Lawyer with Msc in Energy & Climate Policy - interdisciplinary climate solutions for intersectional challenges.
Renewables are undisputably the fastest way we can decarbonize the global economy. We have the ambition, technology, and resources available to rapidly scale up renewables to meet the #3xrenewables target. What we need now is the political will to make it happen. Achieving this vision will require smart allocation of resources - like cutting wasteful fossil fuel subsidies and redirecting those funds to accelerate equitable renewable energy deployment globally. The renewable energy transition presents a monumental opportunity to build a more just and sustainable world. Renewables can bring affordable clean power to communities that need it most. They can create quality jobs in emerging sectors. And they can help stabilize our climate for future generations. But this potential can only be realized through inclusive policies and community participation. The transition must be designed to benefit all people, especially marginalized groups. The world needs renewables today for a brighter shared future tomorrow. With commitment and collaboration, a rapid and equitable shift to renewable energy is within our reach. The time for bold climate action is now.
🇨🇵 Today at the EnR Entreprises conference at the DGCCRF - Ministère de l'Économie in Paris, the Global Renewables Alliance was delighted to share insights on global renewable capacity trends and outline the key focus areas essential for steering us towards #3xRenewables Bruce Douglas, CEO of the GRA: "The remarkable surge in renewables during 2023 highlights the attainability of our tripling goal. However, reaching this milestone requires a comprehensive approach to address all barriers hindering the acceleration of renewable energy." Institut Orygeen, Jean-Pierre Riche
