Integrating light sources in the silicon photonics platform is one of the critical challenges for advanced integrated optics/photonics. Successful integration needs to click many checkboxes, as the crucial requirements are low efficient coupling losses, a small footprint, high assembly yield, the scope of automated processes for scaling up the production, and so on. During the PIC Summit Europe 2024 event, imec re-displayed the activity on multi-wavelength hybrid laser for optical interconnects. imec can flip-chip bonded lasers onto the Si-photonics platform with an alignment accuracy within 500 nm and < 2dB coupling loss coupled to ~ 40mW optical power to SiN waveguides. By adding more advanced functionality to the roadmap for excellence, this development aims for the next generation of telecom, datacom, and sensing applications. Thanks for all the kind words and positive reactions over the last few days. It seems my presentation sparked quite a few discussions around more aligned pre-competitive collaboration (especially in Europe) to accelerate much needed innovations and drive towards industrial scale manufacturing of PICs with the right performance at the right cost to fulfill the promise of value for applications in optical datacom, optical I/O, sensing, consumer, and more.

#FocusOnAsia 🗓 Wednesday 16 October, Warsaw On my way back from the excellent Photonics Days by OpTecBB (thank you Adrian Mahlkow, Mike RICHARDSON for the invitation) I'm refocusing further east 😉 Next Wednesday at the "Focus on Asia" conference in Warsaw I'll have the opportunity to join Dr Malgorzata Bonikowska, Małgorzata Bieniaszewska, Tomasz Łukaszuk and Bartłomiej Lewandowski for the opening panel moderated by Krzysztof Zalewski. Polish photonics industry is exploring the wide range of opportunities there - from the industrial (and investment) needs of the Gulf states to technology centres of Japan and Taiwan to overwhelming Chinese market. Yet are we playing to our strengths? Are there new paths worth exploring?
