Effective support systems help: 🔸 Guidance from experienced professionals 🔸 Connection to industry networks 🔸 Access to valuable resources Make a difference by: 🔸 Mentor underrepresented individuals 🔸 Advocate for inclusive hiring 🔸 Teach coding skills Create lasting impact: 🔸 Offer diversity-focused internships 🔸 Provide bias training for hiring teams 🔸 Establish Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) What actions and initiatives did I miss that are driving diversity and inclusion in tech?

With just a month left before starting my Software Engineering & Machine Learning internship, I'd like to take a minute to share some of the crucial things that I did to secure this opportunity. Big tech layoffs have saturated the market with qualified applicants, making internships and full-time positions harder to get. Here are some ideas for helping yourself to stand out: 1) Portfolio: I developed a personal portfolio that includes my personal and academic interests. This gives employers a sense of who you are and why they should seek you. Be confident in your brand. 🗃️ 2) Leetcode: Leetcode is undeniably a rite of passage for CS students. But don't be convinced that you need to exhaustively practice until you dream in Big O. Instead, study and be confident in your ability to break down problems and think through your solutions. 🧑💻 3) Read: With new tools and models coming out daily, it's important to stay current in the things that interest you. CS is as much about culture as it is about technical skills. LinkedIn is a great place to hear about breakthroughs and interesting papers. 📄 4) Involvement: If you're in school, getting involved with any kind of CS club or ACM chapter is crucial. This is a great way to make friends and to ensure you're in the know when opportunities come around. (Post coming!) 🏛️ 5) Be Critical: Constantly evaluate your skillset in reference to your peers on a local and global scale -- most of us have this down. Pair a critical mind with an encouraging spirit, and, as the saying goes, focus on being better than you were yesterday. My favorite analogy: 1.0^365 = 1 1.01^365 = 37.7 💪🏼 6) Perseverance: After receiving 5-10 internship rejection emails per week throughout last spring semester, I was ecstatic to finally land an interview, and consequently an internship at Parsons Corporation. 💡 "Think in the n+1 step." This is some of the best advice I received from a Raikes alum currently working at Microsoft. To truly advance in your career, start by putting yourself in the shoes of someone one step ahead of you. For me, as a Software Engineer Intern during the summer, this meant thinking and acting like someone in a Software Engineer I position. When I first started, I focused on completing tasks as quickly as possible, hoping to prove my value to the squad and boost our overall output. However, it led to a lot of comments in code review pointing out lines that could’ve been written differently to make stuff easier for other people who would use it. Now, I approach my work with a greater focus on quality. A Software Engineer I doesn’t just write code to complete a task—they write code with their squad and customers in mind. They ensure it's testable, they consider the needs of their Quality Analysts, and they handle errors in a user-friendly way, providing informative messages. This mindset allowed me to anticipate challenges, grasp the bigger picture, and make decisions aligned with the responsibilities of a full-fledged Software Engineer. At the same time, it ensured that I fully owned my intern duties—because if a Software Engineer I can handle the work of an intern and more, then so can I. 3 behavior shifts I made to get a summer 2024 software engineering internship: 1️⃣ Look at your goal every day. At the beginning of the recruiting season, my goal was to get an offer by Thanksgiving. Around that time, MLT had us do a self-assessment of our recruiting preparedness. They detailed 5 levels of preparedness, with level 5 being the most prepared. I took the checklist for level 5 preparedness and made it my computer wallpaper. Every day when I opened my laptop I’d see this checklist and automatically scan down it. The best part is that I ended up achieving my goal ahead of schedule. 2️⃣ Focus on the main thing. When it came to technical practice, my main objective was just showing up every day. So, when I got up in the mornings, the top thing on my mind was “How am I gonna do my one daily leetcode question?” I looked at my calendar and found time to make this one thing happen. 3️⃣ Embrace 80/20 short term trade offs. In order to further promote focus, I made some short term trade offs. I stayed logged out of most social media. At one point, I deleted Spotify so I could replace my podcast habit with a set of PM mock interview videos I wanted to watch. This is maybe a bit overkill, but it worked 🤷🏾♀️. What behavior shifts would you add or remove from this list?

It would be an understatement to say my first code review went horrible. It was cringe-worthy. In front of everyone, my manager told me I was the weakest link in his chain, and I don’t blame him; I was indeed the weakest link in his chain of command. But that’s also the beauty of newcomers in the software industry. We don’t know how hard it could be, yet how simple it is. I guess most software engineers’ journeys begin like this. In the first two years of my employment, I lived in constant fear of getting fired. Overwhelmed by that fear, I learned everything I could lay my eyes on, but that was never enough. It took me a long time to figure out that it’s okay to not know everything; I will figure it out. If you’re going to join your first job, accept that you have a lot to learn. Approach everyone in your team with an attitude of learning, even when you become a seasoned professional. No one can teach us if our cups are already filled. Approach everyone with folded hands and an empty cup, and when the time comes, pay your debt in full and more.
