Can someone explain to me what exactly happened with Crowdstrike this morning? I get there was a bug in the latest Falcon Sensor release…but how did that get to all of these mission critical production machines without being discovered? It’s been several years since I worked with Crowdstrike (a company and product I think is amazing) but unless they changed something, you were supposed to configure Falcon Sensor Update Policies by Host Group to ensure you had a chance to validate w/ non-critical (or explicit test) hosts before the update hit your critical production system. For example, it you had DC’s you wouldn’t have them all update to the latest at the same time. You stagger the update so if there is a problem you don’t lose all your domain controllers at once.

Let me know your opinion: You can interpret this picture in so many ways. First of all, this is not the best photo-op for Crowdstrike to show off their partnership with Mercedes. But looking beyond that, it reminds us of several outages caused by seemingly innocent code changes. Almost every summer in July, an update to AV software or something similar wreaks havoc on organizations. It will happen again, I promise you. Looking ahead, what can we do about it? How can we protect mission-critical systems from such outages? Can you allow your pit wall to turn blue while your F1 cars are barreling down the track at 300+ km/h? You cannot stop deploying updates because they protect you. But updates have to be tested, thoroughly and quickly. You are short staffed due to summer vacations.
