Yep, Ideogram's gen AI does a good job of generating images. But, while "help people become more creative" is a great tagline, a more accurate way to describe the product is "turn text into images — really well". The underlying user need is clear: "I need an image that suits my vision, but I don't want to have to learn how to draw or paint, or operate a drawing program". Think of the art directors and assistants in the TV show "Mad men". They were fulfilling the same job to be done then as now: "make me an image that suits my vision". And Ideogram etc will, most definitely, do a great job of that. What's missing? Internal discourse among practitioners. Oh, sure, you can re-train image genereators to get different styles going. Someone will figure out a way to turn typographic principles into prescriptive and probabillistic models that this and other tools can use. Still, what we'll be missing is internal discourse, i.e. looking at what we make and asking … "IS IT THIS?" … and then figuring out what it is we want from that which we make. We currently have a magic spraycan. An incredibly awesome, and somewhat unpredictable, magic spraycan. What we don't have is reflective practice (google Donald Schön if you're not familiar with the term), a way to stay close to the problem as we work. There is a terrible possibility that generative AI will give us — no, not civilization-ending technology as elucidated in Westworld and Terminator — but a surfeit of "goods of efficiency" (see Alasdair MacIntyre) that would make the digital part of civilization mostly pointness, because its semantic and semiotic content would be largely scrubbed free of meaning. And no, AI isn't causing that on its own. AI didn't magically burrow into Spotify and inject "songs" into my playlist. People did that. People, largely scrubbed free of semantic content.
Excited to share that Ideogram raised $80 million in series A funding to help people become more creative through generative AI. We're building a generational company at the forefront of AI for creativity! Join us if you're excited about building a more creative future for us all: https://jobs.ideogram.ai. Andreessen Horowitz led the round and Redpoint Ventures, Pear VC, Index Ventures, SVA participated. Thank you Martin Casado, Jennifer Li, Anjney Midha, Ben Horowitz, Patrick Chase, Jacob Effron, Mike Volpi, Topher Conway, Pejman Nozad! Shoutout to our seed investors including AIX Ventures, Golden Ventures, Two Small Fish Ventures, Conviction, Ryan Dahl, Raquel Urtasun, Jeff Dean, Sarah Guo, Mahyar Salek, Soleio, Tom Preston-Werner, Andrej Karpathy, Pieter Abbeel.
