Recently something came up, where I got into a discussion regarding how one might scope out post gold plating cleaning validation for a skin-contact flex circuit, which is being fabricated in a shared factory space. First, the idea of cross contamination and cleaning equipment change over is significant. Thinking through a cyanide-based gold plating process, we would need a multi step cleaning process integration. This would include some kind of bulk clean, ultrasonic cleans, multi-step rinses rinses, and inspections. We had to reason through if we wanted to do a standard elemental analysis, bath assays, offline particulates, inline particulates, etc... The main question was whether we could afford a standalone line that NEVER sees anything but the hypothetical flex circuit integration and only other compatible integrations, like an implantable flex circuit. The basic roadblock was whether we could ever really mix a commercial integration, let's say with incidental lead exposure, in a cleaning bath that was intended for direct human use products. This even goes to the question of whether you should segregate hand tools one uses to do PM's on a commercial bath, versus a human use bath. This mixed use question gets tricky when it comes to actual process validation, not the de facto but complying to the letter of the law, so to speak. Technic vertical roll to roll rinse station:

As a result, low and no-etch oxide innerlayer adhesion processes are becoming increasingly important to reduce circuit roughness for decreased signal loss and to minimize the amount of copper removed to retain fine circuit geometries.
