#MeetOurTeam 👋🏼 Meet James Harris!   James recently joined our CEA team as our newest Engineer! He will be working on Rob Van’s team. We’re very excited to have him as our new addition to CEA! We asked him the following questions:  🟩 Why did you decide to work in this industry? From a young age I was always fascinated as to how things worked and came together. That is what drew me to the industry, once there I was taken back by just how broad it was and found myself loving really enjoying the daily challenges to solve problems that help people. 🟧 What value do you hope to contribute to Colvin Engineering?. I hope to learn anything and everything that I can. I know I do not know everything and feel that I need to be learning something every day. But specifically I want to enhance my knowledge on HVAC systems and refine all other aspects of mechanical engineering.   #EnergyEfficientEngineering #Engineering #CEA #ColvinEngineering

The whole reason I chose the engineering path.

😮 I was only 11 months into my engineering career when my entire department quit. My manager left after my first nine months. Then the remaining engineers in my department quit within the following two months. Eleven months out of school. Green engineer. Still so much to learn! After the fallout, just my CAD technician and I were left standing. The company decided not to replace anyone who had left. 🤷🏻♀️ I was the only electrical engineer left to support the architectural division. My company had two electrical departments – one to support architectural and one to support industrial. The other electrical department manager was tasked with mentoring me. Otherwise, I was on my own. Not exactly what I was expecting less than a year out of school! I had a big decision to make. ❓ Should I stay or should I go?? After a lot of thought, I chose to stay. I figured it would be a good opportunity to learn and grow. I was right. Sure, I often learned by making mistakes, but it was all part of the process. I developed more quickly as both an engineer and a working professional. As the only EE, I also took on more of a leadership role by default. The skills and competencies I developed by choosing to stay proved to be invaluable throughout my career. When a roadblock appears, it’s so tempting to turn around and go back the way we came. The path of least resistance. We already know what we’re going to encounter along the way. I could have quit and started over somewhere new. 💫 What I learned by staying, though, is that finding the opportunity in a roadblock makes us that much stronger. I faced unexpected challenges. I faced the unknown. I faced uncertainty. I forged a new path. 🌟 I learned. I grew. I thrived.

In the first quarter of 2024, the number of job vacancies in engineering professions decreased by 15.6% to 148,000 but remains high. The shortage indicator remains unchanged at 333. The most affected areas are energy and electrical engineering (558), construction/surveying/building services and architecture (433), mechanical and automotive engineering (368), and IT (303).
