I just attended a virtual networking meetup hosted by Bungie. It was incredibly fun to hear from staff in all different departments. Here are 4 takeaways: 🧠🎮 1: "Teams are stronger than heroes." - That attitude really came through in how the staff members spoke to, and about each other. 2: "People first." One team member expressed how they were nervous to join such a large corporation, because of how often individuals tend to get steamrolled by the machine. Later they discovered that Bungie does things very differently. It was very cool to hear about how serious Bungie is about taking care of their people, and maintaining a work-life balance. 3: "Unleashing limitless potential." It was amazing to hear all the talk of passing the torch, and training the next generation of talent. This practice is woven into all that they do to ensure that their work is lasting. 4: They take chances. One person shared about how they initially had no interest in game development. They only wanted to be a tester so they could play the game early, but ended up getting hired. Years later, they have a senior role. As someone looking for my first big break in the industry, that was super cool and hopeful to hear. All in all, I walked away excited and ready for my next chance to apply at this amazing company.

Wow, such wisdom!
The other day I was in a cafe and I overheard three women nursing their newborn babies having a conversation. One of them said, "I've been playing classical music for my son because I want him to be in an orchestra." Another chimed in, "I've been showing mine football compliation videos because I want her to be a famous sports star." The third mother, smirked a bit, and said "I've been reading mine Linkedin posts by an entrepreneur called Ken Cheng. I'm hoping he'll be a ruthless and successful CEO like he is." The others' eyes suddenly opened wide. "Can you share some of his wisdom? A CEO is way more impressive than being a musician or footballer." "Of course," the third mother said. Then, her baby coughed and pulled at his mother's top. "What's the matter, David?" David pointed at one of the other's babies cute red bow they were wearing. "Oh I see. I'll share one of his lessons if you give me Kirsty's red bow." Kirsty's Mum immediately relented and David now had the bow. "That's one of Ken's first lessons: never give anything away for free." I always knew my advice was universal, but I never thought babies would be picking up on it. Amazing.

Finally, I was able to get this malware off of my computer. You have to install a separate app from Adobe, if you try to do it through the usual means it will just say "nope."

Great news! Grimshire has surpassed its goal of getting 10,000 wishlists a full 7 months ahead of launch! This means it has a real shot at getting featured on various Steam lists, and will *hopefully* allow wishlists (and sales) to multiply many times over. Although early access is still several months away, you can play the demo (and hear delightful sound and music by yours truly) right now! I’ll put a link in the comments 🔗🎮

How I saved clients a big chunk of money: 💵💰 As many of you know, I've been working on the farming game "Grimshire." Like it's contemporaries in the genre, Grimshire has mines that the player can dig around in. Originally, the budget only allowed for 3 minutes of mining music. ⛏ The issue is, the player will spend dozens and dozens of hours down there. The music would have been far too repetitive, so I came up with an interesting solution. 💡 In the mines, there are 7 unique biomes (clay, stone, ice, etc.) Upon entering a new biome, several layers of the song change in real time to reflect the new location. While the main chord progression and certain musical textures remain constant throughout, the changing layers expand the piece into 7 completely unique versions. 🔊 While this ended up being a huge amount of work, we reached a compromise by halving the length of the song, and keeping the arrangement as sparse as possible. This allowed me to stay on pace, and in the end, we are all happy. 🤝 I made a little video to showcase some of my music and the transitions between biomes. 🎥 Oh, and btw... **I am a freelance composer and sound designer looking for new clients in Q1 of 2025. Sound Designer: Someone who spends forever hunting through libraries for the perfect filing cabinet sound effects, only to say "heck it I'll make my own" who then proceeds to get super excited when they end up recording the perfect filing cabinet sounds. It's a glamorous job. Don't suffer through this part of game dev. Hire a sound designer! 🙋♂️ **I am a freelance composer and sound designer looking for new clients in Q1 of 2025. DM for inquiries.**

I love my job! A friend of mine in the military graciously lent me his 1943 M1 Garand. I adore that signature *PIIIING* This is for my upcoming survival horror project, Dread Tales: Escape. While the game is not going to be combat heavy, there will be some moments of tense gunplay which will allow some of the more detailed foley moments to shine through. **I am a freelance composer and sound designer looking for new clients in Q1 of 2025. Yesterday was a great day for two major reasons: 1: Our game “Grimshire” started trending on Steam! To think our little indie game could cut through the noise with so many excellent titles coming out is wild to me. 2: I finally got to visit Pink Gorilla Games in Seattle! Of course I had to pick up a Japanese version of one of my all time favorite games, Warioware Inc. Two big bucket list items in one day 🎉 Have you been to Pink Gorilla? **I am a freelance composer and sound designer looking for new clients in Q1 of 2025. DM for inquiries.**
