I’ve loved helping Hubbub launch their Nature Hubs fund and winners and seeing some of the amazing projects up and running all over the country. On a personal note, community gardening is a topic very close to my heart. Not only am I part of the allotment-holding community, I also volunteer in a primary school, teaching kids how to grow food and look after nature. Every week I witness the pure joy these children feel from seeing their seeds germinate, observing insects and even sampling elderflower cordial from the elderflowers they’ve picked. We need to create a foundation for children to protect and work with nature in the future and I truly believe school and community gardening can play a big role in this. Academic research shows how access to gardens at school can help promote pro-conservation behaviour among pupils. So why is it not more of a priority considering the huge environmental challenges we’re facing? Well there’s no money. Most teachers aren’t trained in this area and just don’t have the capacity. Parent volunteers are scarce as they too are under pressure to work all hours and many don’t have the basic gardening skills needed. I don’t know what the answer is but I can’t help but feel there are solutions out there (local retired garden enthusiasts working with schools?). They just need resource and funding. I do hope the new government takes action on this… but I’m not holding my breath. In the meantime, it’s brilliant to see companies like Starbucks fund community gardening projects and help more people access green space and get closer to nature. Wouldn’t it be great for more of the private sector to help boost school gardening too?
There are 100 reasons to spend time in nature. 🌿 From getting creative inspiration, to channeling your inner hunter-gatherer. 🦣 I get my fix from running through the parks of North London, seeing how the seasons change and letting my mind float along the way. 🧠 Today Hubbub is announcing 100 more: the winners of The Nature Hubs Fund. We’ve just funded 100 community nature projects across the country with grants of up to £6k thanks to the Starbucks 5p Cup Charge. All 100 #NatureHubs are unique. Things like: • Greening a car park at the aquarium in Hull 🐡 • A community garden on a housing estate in Sheffield 🧑🌾 • Woodland restoration (with a creative writing twist) in Worcester 📝 All will bring nature closer to people and people closer to nature. 🔄 Our polling shows that 37% of people in the UK spend less than an hour a week in nature. We're celebrating 100 more reasons to do so with this video. (Spot two of my kids in it at the start!) 🧒 If you want to talk about how to fund and support community-led green space, do drop me a line 📧 ++ P.S. I'm CEO of environmental charity Hubbub. We bring business, government and civil society together to create campaigns that inspire & support people to make choices that are good for the environment. If you caught my talk at MAICON this past week, you know that I mentioned Baypath Humane Society as an organization that benefits from #AI and efficiencies in their operations. 95% of their funding comes from public donations. They have outgrown their current facility and are looking ahead to what's next. To get there, they still need support from volunteers, donors, the dedicated staff, and you. As a volunteer I can say first hand that the space they currently occupy is incredibly cramped, but somehow they manage to make it work. If you want to learn more, please check out this video. If you are interested in getting involved, give me a shout 🐶 #MAICON #AI #Volunteer #changemanagement https://lnkd.in/ecvb7cqu

Like the subtle shift in prairie winds before a storm, the federal freeze on grants for nonprofits has many feeling unsettled. Yet time and again, I’ve seen that with every challenge comes a renewed sense of purpose—and an opportunity to carve out new paths forward. When the old routes close, hope and real solutions are still within reach, especially for those bold enough to share their stories in ways that stir hearts and open doors. Last year, I worked with a conservation organization determined to safeguard the landscapes and habitats we all call home. Through a series of compelling, human-centered stories, they secured a 400% increase in corporate partnerships. That growth didn’t just bolster immediate funding—it provided a rich portfolio of assets that filled their marketing calendar across print, digital, web, and email. No one knew these stories better than the people on the ground—the staff, volunteers, and communities bound by a common passion for preserving the natural world. The recent government decision is a powerful reminder: diversifying revenue streams is no longer a luxury—it’s a necessity. And it starts with authentic storytelling that resonates at a soul-deep level. At Saxum, we’ve seen how the right narrative can spark new partnerships and sustain the vital work that nonprofits do, year after year. If you’re ready to forge new paths and build lasting support in 2025, let’s connect. We’ll bring the same spirit of storytelling, rooted in shared humanity and the unifying ability of our land, to help you tap into fresh sources of growth. Because when we champion the power of the human spirit, no hurdle—funding freeze or otherwise—can truly stand in our way. #NonprofitLeadership #ExecutiveStrategy #CorporatePartnerships #StrategicGrowth #BoardOfDirectors #CxO #MarketingInnovation #StorytellingForImpact #Philanthropy #SustainabilityMatters #LeadershipDevelopment #CommunityEngagement #LongTermSuccess #HighImpactSolutions #BusinessStrategy
