The more I have learned about the impact of parking requirements, the more I see excessive parking requirements as a public health issue. They reduce availability of housing, transit, and community walkability/rideability. I am still learning on this topic, but I support critically examining all parking requirements.
Beverly's Pickled Onion proposed building 8 transit-oriented homes over a new Pickled Onion. The project died when they were told they'd have to provide 18 spots for the restaurant... “There’s been a restaurant there for 70 years... we’ve never been required to have parking." Minimum parking requirements suffocate small business and strangle our ability to produce the housing we need in our communities. They're an arbitrary, archaic relic from the past and it's finally time once and for all to rid ourselves of these handcuffs and let our communities flourish again. Parking Reform Network
