A Michelin Star could be a blessing, but it could also be the death of a restaurant. Since the Michelin Guide first arrived in Hong Kong in 2009, over a quarter of its Michelin-starred restaurants have closed, highlighting the significant challenges of maintaining such a prestigious accolade. Out of 163 restaurants awarded one, two, or three stars, 41 have shut their doors, affected by protests, the COVID pandemic, and what has been termed the "Michelin kiss of death." This pattern mirrors a similar trend in New York, where 40% of Michelin-starred restaurants awarded between 2005 and 2014 had closed by 2019, according to a study in the Strategic Management Journal. The closures of renowned Hong Kong establishments like Aaharn, Rech by Alain Ducasse, and Écriture reflect the intense financial pressures that Michelin recognition can bring, which often result in higher expectations from customers and operational strain on restaurateurs.
