Solutions Engineering and Presales Leader with 13+ years experience leading high-value organizations
Recently, we went through the hiring process for Sales Engineering Managers on my team. We had a ton of interest, including 9 talented, smart Sales Engineers from the current team. We had to make some really tough decisions, and I'm so grateful to everyone who applied for their effort and the courage it took to put themselves out there. In my conversations with some folks after, I was asked what advice I had for developing a management style, and if there were any books or activities I'd recommend. I'm not an expert *at all* but here's my answer: 1. Learn about the world. Invest in your interests and feed your curiosity in people and science and art and history. Think about the kind of human you want to be, and then work towards being that person. 2. Reflect on past leaders you've worked for: what did they do well? What did they struggle with? What are the good parts that you'd want to take from those examples? 3. Think about your team as a business, and you're the CEO. What's working? If you have a quota, what actions do you take to hit that number? What do you prioritize (and why)? 4. Remember that being a leader is not the same as being a manager. Being a leader is not a special title: it's being empathetic, helpful, and solving challenges for yourself & those around you. And if you are in a position now where you don't feel like you have the power to do these things, ask your manager to help find you opportunities to lead in your current role. Finally, I am vehemently against reading most books about business, but the one I'd recommend is Dare to Lead by Brené Brown. If anyone out there has other recs, I'd love to hear them!

Specialized consultant in MRO, Aerospace and Defense. I connect top talent with leading firms to drive operational excellence and support critical projects.
You know you're destined to thrive in a leading manufacturing company because… -You excel in environments where clarity evolves from complexity, guiding decisions even when the path isn’t fully clear. -You're hands-on and relish the opportunity to dive into various aspects of manufacturing, from product development to operational efficiency. -The dynamic rhythm of manufacturing energizes you, where products and processes evolve rapidly to meet market demands. -Building products that matter, from initial design to final production, is where you find your passion. -You're eager for the chance to take on more responsibility, playing a key role in your team’s and company's success. -You appreciate the lessons learned from facing and overcoming industry-specific challenges, viewing each as an opportunity for personal and professional growth. Securing talent that embodies these traits is challenging, Especially those with a track record of enhancing productivity, quality, and profitability. The manufacturing sector is not for everyone, and that’s perfectly okay. Manufacturing leaders... -Do you have the bandwidth to identify these exceptional individuals? -Are you equipped with the right strategies to effectively vet candidates, avoiding costly hiring mistakes? -Do you feel the pressure from stakeholders to quickly fill critical roles that directly impact your operation's success? These are important considerations. Perhaps you’re capable of managing this on your own. Or maybe partnering with a seasoned professional who can shoulder this burden for you is the answer. #manufacturing #recruiting #staffing

Operations Manager & Analyst @ Miala Media and Marketing | Utilizing data-driven insights to inform business decisions, optimize processes, and drive growth.
Embracing the Unpredictability of Operations Management As an Operations Manager, I've come to realize that uncertainty is just part of the job description. No two days are ever the same, and each new vendor, customer, or team member brings a unique twist to the mix. But instead of seeing it as a challenge, I view it as an opportunity to flex my problem-solving muscles, tap into my resourcefulness, and put my communication and empathy skills to the test. It's amazing how much my tactical, strategic, and analytical training comes into play when navigating the chaos. From managing logistics to mitigating risks, every moment requires a combination of critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration. And at the end of the day, it's all about finding solutions, driving results, and making things happen. I've learned to embrace the unknown and trust my abilities to adapt and innovate. It's a thrilling ride, and I'm constantly learning and growing. Anyone else out there thrive in the fast-paced world of operations management? #operationsmanagement #problema_solving #adaptability #leadership"

How to navigate a career journey from an individual contributor to an engineering director? 🤔 In this insightful newsletter by Nicola Ballotta, he shares a condensed breakdown of this journey. 🚀 Below are key takeaways from this piece. Hope it helps 👇 💎 Transitioning from individual contributor to engineering manager 🔶 Challenges: ➡️ A shift from a hands-on role to a managerial position i.e. overseeing people who build things is a significant change. ➡️ Structuring a day in initial days and experiencing impostor syndrome. ➡️ Managing and resolving conflicts are add-on tasks. 🔶 Solutions: ➡️ Hire individuals with stronger technical skills. ➡️ Identify exceptional individuals and empower them to drive the entire team's success. ➡️ Evaluate the impact of the team to avoid feeling an impostor. 💎From engineering manager to director 🔶 Challenges: ➡️ Being involved in the larger company's plans and feeling of having less freedom. ➡️ Managing managers is a new challenge too. ➡️ Work becomes less direct and tangible. ➡️ Tough to find helpful resources. 🔶 Solutions: ➡️ Encourage open communication with the entire team and broader company. ➡️ Adapt to change is essential. ➡️ Trust your team and the managers. ➡️ Stay updated and open to feedback to make informed decisions. ➡️ Have mentors or coaches to assist you on your journey. Kudos to Nicola Ballotta Ballotta for sharing valuable lessons. Extremely helpful! 🙏 #engineeringmanagement #engineeringleadership #careerdevelopment #engineeringmanager #softwaredeveloper
