Diverse teams fuel innovation, profitability, customer satisfaction, and growth. Research shows that companies benefit from having women in leadership positions, yet women continue to be underrepresented. As part of our 2030 Strategy, we are committed to creating a truly inclusive culture, increasing the representation of women in leadership positions in a traditionally male-dominated industry. We are proud of our efforts so far in bridging the gender gap across our global workforce, and of our inclusion index which stands at a strong 83%. In 2023, the share of women in leadership roles at Huhtamaki increased, with approximately 30% of our senior management and Executive Team being women, and close to 50% in our Board of Directors. We also actively recruit women to shopfloor roles across our global sites and provide ongoing support to accelerate their career growth. International Women's Day is an important reminder that while we’ve made progress, there is still work to be done. International Women’s Day (IWD) and the focus on Women's month has come and gone! In my view, too many organisations’ initiatives during women’s month focus on the superficial, and these organisations love the idea of what IWD brings. The reality is that these organisations are still trying to fit gender mainstreaming strategies into pre-existing structures (and all the barriers and obstacles that come with that) and even worse, it is often more hype and fluffy employee PR, and hence nothing really changes. (I would love to be wrong, but global statistics say otherwise.) I am proud of the impact and sustainability Thrive Online is having, even after the hype of International Women’s Day and the focus on Women slowly evaporates after the March hype until next year. TribeL Consulting & The Thrive Project in collaboration with ClarkHouse built Thrive Online to unite women leaders from every corner of the globe. “Women are often hired and promoted based on past accomplishments, while men are hired and promoted based on future potential. Almost a quarter of women 30 and under say that their age has contributed to them missing out on a raise, promotion, or chance to get ahead.” - McKinsey & Company, 2023 As a young leader, age was always an uphill battle for promotion qualification. It was far worse for other women around me. The “Broken Rung” is very real. For every 100 men promoted from entry level to manger, 87 women were promoted. The statistics are far worse for women of color and are trending in the wrong direction. For #InternationalWomensDay, let’s reaffirm our commitment to keeping women in the workforce and encouraging leadership at every level. Let’s move past the archaic structure where flexibility and management don’t co-exist. Let’s keep our eyes on the prize and keep our foot on the pedal towards the right direction.
