Basic Geology Field Mapping is dying out in country. Most of the mapping now is done by junior geologists and most senior geos roles are now desk bound and more adminitrative. We need to keep this old tradition of field mapping and plotting on paper alive. Exploration is dying out but the demand of metals isn't. Basic field mapping is the key to put the surface geology into perspective. #justathought

Tunnelling & Rock Engineering Expert, Rocscience Representative and President, ISRM Commission on Hard Rock Excavation
🌍 Happy Geologists' Day! 🪨 Today, as we celebrate the indispensable contributions of geologists worldwide, I want to share something special from my own experience as a civil engineer specializing in Rock Mechanics. 🚀 Watch the Video: https://lnkd.in/gNmF8hmY In this video, taken from one of my online courses, I delve into a candid conversation about the pivotal role that geologists, particularly Engineering Geologists, play in fields like tunnelling, rock slope engineering, mining, and more. My journey in these sectors has been profoundly enriched by the insights and expertise of geologists. Their work not only lays the foundation for what we build but ensures that our endeavours are safe, sustainable, and in harmony with the natural world. As someone who bridges the gap between engineering and geology, I've witnessed first-hand how crucial geological knowledge is in our quest to design and construct infrastructures that stand the test of time and elements. This Geologists' Day, let's take a moment to appreciate the rock stars of the earth sciences – whose contributions underpin our successes in more ways than we can count. 👷♂️💡 Whether you're directly involved in geosciences, engineering, or simply intrigued by how our world is shaped, I invite you to watch this discussion and join me in applauding the unsung heroes of our built and natural environments. #GeologistsDay #EngineeringGeology #RockMechanics #CivilEngineering #SustainableDevelopment #Infrastructure

Circa 1988 July..100/03-21-34-06 W4M..ALTEX CANTERRA PROVOST Received a call from VP Geology..Mr. Dave Hutchinson to hurry out to Consort alberta to wellsitt this wellbore..This well the first of 3 wells to be drilled in a row to evaluate the Lower Mannville sands for oil production.. During the 1980's Altex Resources drilled a series of wellbores targetting Lower Mannville sands with funding mostly from Oklahoma and elsewhere..Dave was a huge supporter of drillcutting analysis at the wellsite and was the only company i worked that used a Sample collection system.. Sample Boy distributed by Petrocraft Products in Calgary,Alberta Canada at that time...Worked great for gel-chem based mud systems..roughnecks liked it as well..Basically the drillcuttings shook over a shale shaker screen on to a cylinder that 0.25 dia holes drilled into a plate and stream of water there to wash the chips into the cylinder and coarser sizes was washed over into sump..To collect a sample,a bucket was held at the bottom of cylinder and a latch there was tripped by hand and the drillcuttings dropped into the bucket ..From there the roughneck, handsqueezed the drillcuttings before bagging them..It all worked slick, more time for me examine the drillcuttings and keepup behind the drillbit viewing the chips, plotting drilling times and compiling a hand drawn KWIK SCAN Striplog, with the parameters we was taught..Just never had enough room to compose it all...Always drove to a landline somewhere to discuss what it was i interpreted, probably was one of the best exploration geologists i worked for that new his rocks, via microscope or otherwise and trusted me..etc..he had labored hard at TEXACO CANADA he said,in the field and office to learn the geology in WCSB-WIS at that time..Was always sticker for details which i handwritten for him and never included in well reports..Again,me thoughts and opinions from my recollections, well reports, data, images as part of my LINKEDIN Post: Rigscapes and Landscapes,Geoscapes Across the Alberta Prairie (1972 to 2022) for the love of rocks, stratigraphy and everything in between..this post is for HISTORY purposes and not to be used for HYSTERIA..
