Preserving Identity This keynote featuring Furkan Demirci, (Chairman, Türkiye Design Council), Cem Yılmaz (Chairman and Founding Partner, KEYM) and Loukia Iliopoulou (Partner, Urban Designer, Foster + Partners) will focus on the recovery from the February 2023 earthquakes in the Hatay region of southeastern Türkiye, where an international design-led collaboration effort is underway to revitalise it in a way that honours its past, prepares it for the future and embraces its community. The keynote will address a challenge becoming increasingly important in global disaster recovery: how can architecture and design protect and reinforce cultural identity in a time of crisis, and how much of a priority should this be?   Speakers will share how the design principles and plans developed by Foster + Partners, DB Architects, KEYM Urban Renewal Centre with Buro Happold and MIC-HUB recognise that post-disaster, revitalization is not only about buildings and a place's future economic and climate resilience, but rebuilding communities’ feelings of trust, safety, and belonging.

Tools and methodologies within the Architectural discourse are often limited. To transform Architectural Design requires: Storytelling Pluriversality Sociocultures Vernacular Deterritorialization Sumak Kawsay It’s been two years since I began a journey of empathy, seeking conjugation in the architectural discourse that seldom prioritizes land-based and narrative practices. The Climigrant’s Sketchbook Initiative (CSI) is a multidisciplinary architectural research practice built out of tools and compasses often overlooked within the field of design. By re-centering community participation and situating research with the earth might challenge designers to consciously seek more equitable solutions to a conflict of our times; climate induced displacement. I’ve been privileged to travel across the Americas during my field research; a practice strung between the Ecuadorian Amazon and my birthplace in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. What if the Floor Area Ratio (FAR) wasn’t just determined by the size of a plot but also by its environmental and social implications? Should urban parameters like FAR be shaped by their broader environmental and social impact? Through the collaboration between IE Center for Sustainable Cities, (IE School of Architecture and Design) and Serviland, we have explored these critical questions in our report: “Analysis, Evaluation, and Implementation of Sustainable Urban Strategies for New Urban Developments.” The report outlines a framework of transversal sustainable strategies that integrate environmental and social parameters, emphasizing their interconnections. We urge public administrations to adopt Transversal Urban Regulations that foster innovative urban developments, where environmental balance and social well-being are at the core of the planning process. The small group of First Nations architects and academics has been shifting the Western paradigm of architecture in Australia for many years. This tireless advocacy has led to various framework documents, competency standards and other policy developments. Finally, we are witnessing a broader swathe of built projects that demonstrate best practice for architectural processes that champion Indigenous collaborations, histories and knowledge. We still have a long way to go; as Carroll Go-Sam and Deidre Brown observe, we are at the beginning of a process of change, but this new wave is yet to reach its crest. Nevertheless, Georgia Birks and I were excited to discover that a collection of projects in this issue of Architecture Australia captures a glimpse of the progress already made. Today on the GH blog we share the first of three think pieces by Design Champion Jake Stephenson. Wider Issues: Race and Architecture. This series of blogs will focus on three specific challenges that persist within the built environment. Firstly, there is a lack of visibility of black and black mixed heritage individuals within the industry. Secondly, we must consider the role of participatory processes and community engagement in the design of our built environments. The objective of the assignment was to develop design interventions for heritage building through adaptive reuse, integrating contemporary functions while preserving their architectural, historic, and cultural values.
